Accidental Effexor Withdrawal

I think I may have done a no-no by mistake. I've been down with a virus and nausea, etc... and for 3-4 days didn't take my effexor. Enough to suffer withdrawal? I feel like I'm getting sick again...nausea, sweats and shakes. Any advice? I did just take my normal dose about 2 hours ago.

I would see how you feel after while, since you just took a dose. If you are not feeling better soon, definately call your doctor, and let him know what is going on. Since you are sick, your effects may be from your illness, as apposed to any withdrawl. How long have you been on the Effexor, and what is your dosage? I think you should be fine, so long as you get back on track now. Keep us posted...I am interested to see how you are feeling tomorrow!

I wouldnt have thought 3-4 days would be enough to cause a major problem. But I agree with Tammy, If your still feelin rotten by Monday I would call the doc and get his advice. I think you should be OK though (in my professionally unprofessional opinion!)

Hi Chutz,

Definately enough to feel withdrawal. If you haven't been well then its hard to pin down what is causing your nausea and shaking but 3-4 days is a long time not to take your Effexor; I used to feel like a truck had hit me if I missed one dose. I noticed that your post was from two days ago; how are you feeling now after starting to take it again? The combination of feeling sick and missing your doses probably made you feel like hell, so I hope you are ok now.

Hey Chutz, I hope your feeling better by now. 

I have taken many different antidepressants over the years and skipping a few doses never really effected me too much in less it was several weeks or more.  I take Effexor Xr now and if I forget to take a dose...even one, I most certainly feel it.  So if you were without for several days then yeah, I bet you were going into withdrawal symptoms.  It should of gone away once you started to take it again.

Effexor is short lived in the bloodstresm. I have done the same thing and it is really scarey. The effects were so bad that I felt like I was falling off of the face of the earth. Once it gets back into your bloodstream you will feel better. I take 375 mg each day. I use to take quick release pills, now I take time release capsules becuase of forgetting to take when I was suppose to.
I promise you will feel better once it gets back into your system. For the meantime just try to relax.

Hi all,

And thanks for your responses. I ended up calling doc on Wed eve. He sent me off to the ER mostly because my blood sugars have been out of site! I was dehydrated and horribly nauseous. They pumped me full of IV fluids and Zofran which really helped. THey also did a CT Scan of my lower GI area and came up with no answers. Apparently I have/had a very nasty virus that I just couldn't kick.

I asked the doc about the Effexor deal and he said at my dose...which is 37.5/day...I shouldn't feel any effects if I miss a couple of doses. I can't tolerate any higher than that dose.

So somewhere on Thursday this virus started to finally lift and I've been 3 days of feeling pretty good. I just hope it holds this time!

Hi Darren,

I have the most wonderful doc. In fact he was voted the best family practice doc in our state last year...and he has a small practice out here in a rural area.

Feeling so much better and thankful for it...

I have a good manual from the people who make venlafaxine (effexor). My CPN (community psych nurse) gave it to me when they had a drugs repgive a talk to them. She said that one of the main side effects of missing doses are severe nausea. If I have missed one dose I can feel sick but everyone is different and can tolerate more than others - I myself have a pretty weak stomach!!

Hi Chutz,

So glad that you are feeling better. I think it is really fantastic that you try to read up on Effexor as much as you can. Sadly, I didnt do this until after I had come off them and been through severe withdrawals so I had no idea what was going on. I wish that I had known what to expect and how to manage the tapering properly. As has been said many times, people react differently when they skip a dose, but it is my opinion that you should never ever do it, even on the dosage that you are on. You might not feel too bad, but it can still really mess around with your body. I used to have some links to good websites so I will see if I can find them and let you know.
