Hello, I just came across this site, and figure out why not I join. Hard to find others who understand what you are going through :(


I got this question also, and as I write this I'm nervous I don't want no one to call me names cause I posted in wrong spot >.<


Here goes, I take Effexor XR, but for some reason the doctor gave me regular Effexor. I have GAD, Depression/Anxiety, I was wondering if there was a big difference between regular Effexor or XR.

First of all welcome to the forum,and no one is going to call you names at all!

I am not quite sure what the difference is between the two drugs, I did see that XR is better with not gaining weight..but not sure.

I would contact your drug store where you got the prescription filled and have the pharmacist answer this question. You will be amazed on how much they know!

Just be careful with the regular effexor.  Make sure that you don't miss doses because it is really short lived in your system.  If you run out or miss a dose by a long amount of time, it can make you dizzy.  I went to xr because of that.

You have posted in exactly the right place and nobody will call you names here... and if they do, me and Shy will get them! lol

More seriously, as far as I am aware (and I am open to correction here) but the difference between Effexor and Effexor XR is that XR is 'controlled release'. I.e. It gets released into the system slowly rather than all in one go with the Effexor. I have the same thing with my anti-epileptics. Instead of taking Tegretol, I take tegretol retard (An unfortunate name when you have to call it out in the pharmacy!).

Please do not be nervous. We all support and help each other here and the only thing we cannot supply is a replacement for good, sound medical advice. All we ask as moderators is that you post within the rules. (Which are pretty open)
