lexipro/does it work?

My husband just went to a pharmachiatrist and was given a two-week sample of Lexipro.  He has a follow-up in two weeks and the doctor is going to consult with his psychotherapist to see if this is the right medication or not.  Is it normal for doctor's to give patients anti-depressant samples?  We're currently separated and he had a hard time even telling me that she gave him an anti-depressant.  There's no question he is depressed.  He can barely open up to me right now and the longer we're apart, the more distant and cool he's gotten.  His eyes look dull and lifeless too.  Will this anti-depressant help him think more objectively clearly?  He's so negative about everything!  I'm ready to give up hope. confused

Hi Kew,

Yes it is normal for the doctors to give out sample medications to their patients. Usually after that, if it works well, they write a prescription. But if you have money difficulties, often they continue with the samples to help you out.

I hope that this helps your husband. Lexapro is fairly new, I think it has only been around a couple of years and it has good results.

I dont know much about the US health system so I cant really comment on the samples thing (Which Karen has pretty well covered anyway!) but I do know people who have used Lexapro and had good results. What I would say is that you need to bear in mind that it will take 4-6 weeks to take full effect so it might not seem like its working to start with.

I just want to say that I have been on Lexipro twice, once for about three years and now again for a few weeks. I think it is a really good drug, and people respond to very different doses of it. I was getting really sleepy on it and so cut my dose in half, and was able to cut it even more than that and did very well on it. I went off it for a few years and now am under a great deal of stress with some deaths in the family, dealing with a teenager and a stressful job, and went back on the drug. After just a few weeks back on the drug, the last few days have been really wonderful. In fact I can't even believe I can write that, but now I feel like I am looking at my life from a more solid ground and can start to rebuild a little sanity and peace.

Welcome to the depression forum. I am happy that the lexapro is working good for you. It is always nice when we find a medication to work and then need it later and it is still the same. It is also nice to read a positive post about somebody feeling well. We charrish posts like that. lol... This time of the year is hard for us. But the days are starting to get brighter and sunnier and most of all, warmer.
