Topamax and weight changes

Hi,

I was put on Topamax about a year ago in order to lose the weight I'd gained while on Prozac. I lost it, although I'm not entirely sure it was due to the Topamax. I lost 5 lb right away but the remaining 10 stuck there and I lost it gradually by changing my diet and exercising harder. So here's my question: I have severe IBS with constipation and I'm pretty sure the Topamax is making my constipation worse. My weight hasn't changed in about 9 months. I don't think it's helping me a bit by continuing to take the Topamax. As long as I'm careful about what I eat and do, will I gain back the weight I lost? I'm no longer on any antidepressant. I remember that while on Prozac I craved carbs, especially sweets, like they were going out of style.

I had a chance once to take topomax to lose weight. I take adderall and still can't lose. I am getting really frustrated. I have been exercising and trying to watch what I eat. But Easter didn't help, another chocolate holiday.

I don't know if you will gain the weight back. I would recommend that you continue to do what you are doing to keep your weight in check. I know how had it can be to lose. And it seems that the older we get, the harder it is.

Hi Karen,

Just wondering, did you mean that you are taking Adderall to lose weight only? I suppose that would be off label just like topamax would be. I am just getting so frustrated with the constipation side effects being an IBS patient that I'm torn between the two issues. I think the constipation is winning and I am better off dealing with the weight on my own...scary though.

I take adderall to combat the fatigue I get from fibromyalgia. If I didn't take it I would sleep all day long and all night. But I figured since it is dextroamphetamine that it would help me with weight loss. Maybe it is and I would weigh a lot more without it. lol...

I am walking every day and watching what I eat and I still can't seem to lose a pound. I had lost five and gained it back. But I did have sweets over Easter, so that is probably not helping any.

I know that it is hard to lose weight when you are constipated. It just doesn't seem to work.

I hope that you can work something out to help you. I hope that I can lose some weight too. I will soon be walking in the woods every day to look for morel mushrooms. So that will help some. You can walk a lot without realizing it.

hi axlsmom. sorry am not familiar with topomax, but i am definately familiar with ant-dep, ant-psych meds that stack on weight. i was put on zoloft over 20yrs ago, for me it was not a good drug period! i found that anti-psych meds gave me the munchies, esp zyprexa!! wow stacked it on with zyprexa, a few others did likewise, although i have not found anti-deps to do this, rather some have done the exact opposite. i have been on the merry go round 4 a long time now, and over the past 5-6 wks i have gone of effexor xr 375, for pristiq, 200mg. was on effexor 4 four yrs, pooped once too many. for sleep, due to insomnia, and that my brain finds it hard 2 shut down, i therefore am on seroquel, 900-1200mg, yeah a lot, if you new my history you would understand!!
