Suffering from depression and peri-menopausal symptoms.

My mother aged 54, suffers from depression and peri-menopausal symptoms. There is no apparent cause for her to be depressed as all is well in my family. My sister and I are well settled. My father is in great health and has a good job. Early symptoms of depression started showing up about three years back. Sessions with the counselor have not helped much. She has been on anti-depressant drugs for quite sometime now. However, I wish there could be some way out to assist her to regain her enthusiasm for life.

Welcome to the forum. You have come to a wonderful site.

Maybe your mom needs an adjustment in medication or some therapy. You could encourage her to go to the doctor and talk to them and see what you suggest.

I think that it is wonderful that you are this concerned about your mom. It shows how much you care. That is great.

Maybe you could encourage her to join the forum. As I said this is a great site and all the members are wonderful and caring.

Hi Baxcin, I understand what your Mom is going thru.  Peri menopause can  really make you feel down.  Maybe she should see her gynecologist to see if there is a short term of hormones she can take.  If she is 54 and no longer has periods she may well be in full menopause. But the good thing is it will pass and she may get back to her old self.  Menopause can be hard on some people. If she needs it counseling can be a big help. As we age we sometimes feel we no longer have a purpose and that can be unsettling.  I think it is a good idea to encourage her to come to this website and talk to others.  She will find many friends here and it may truly lift her spirits knowing there are others out there who will offer her support and comfort.  This is an amazing group of people.  This forum has literally saved me from despair.  Please let her know how much we would love to have her to chat with.  She doesn't have to give her real name, just a forum name and she doesn't have to put any info into her profile or no email address. It is all anonymous and that makes it easier to talk to people.  It can be a little hard getting started but once she writes her 1st thread others will respond very quickly and welcome her.  Wishing you all the best.

hi baxcin, i am jamie, male and 37yrs of age.

for me i have some understanding in a different way. due to a genetic hormonal issues i am on hrt. when i was on the subcutaneous pellets and when i was waiting for the next lot, 5mnth intervals i would become menopausual, crabby, irritable, sweats, hot flushes and even on occassion menpausual tingling in the brain! this lasted about 16 yrs, now on the testogel, i no-longer have the above problems. your mum, may well be in full menopause, time to see the doc. wishing you well. jamie

I am sorry to hear about your mom! Yes, I would be concerned for your mum also. There are alternative therapies for people suffering from depression and peri-menopausal symptoms.
