Scared of blood work

Hi all,

I'm new to this board. I was diagnosed with Anxiety/Depression 5 years ago.  I am currently taking Wellbutrin xl and I am on Yasmin for Birth Control. I was feeling great until I went for a routine physical.  My dr. wants my blood work redone because the platelets are elevated (467) back in November they were 427 but he never brought it to my attention then.  I am concerned what this could be as he would give me no indication of what he's looking for and I feel perfectly fine.  Friday, I had the blood work done and Sunday I came down with symptoms of a cold that is going around...soar throat, ear ache etc.. but I am on the way to feeling beter and knocking it out of my system. My question is..could the elevated numbers be from the virus that I have although my symptoms didn't come until two days later?  I am so affraid and have huge fears of cancer or something horrible.  Any advise is greatly appreciated I'm sure this isn't helping my anxiety at all.

Hi Ginasmom,

First of all welcome to the forum. I am so happy that you have joined us. You have really come to a good place.

I am not sure about your blood work, but I do know that worrying doesn't help your anxiety at all. When will you be seeing the doctor again? Or when do you expect him to have some answers for you? I hope that it is soon so that your anxiety will go down. In the meantime, take deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Called smelling the roses and blowing out the candles. It does help keep anxiety down as does meditation.

Please do let us know what the doctor says. And hopefully somebody will come along with some better answers than I am able to give you. I hope that you get some answers soon.

Sorry for all the stress you are going through. I swear it seems like doctors either want to go into every gory detail or else they refuse to tell you anything.

But if you had your blood drawn last Friday, you should be able to call tomorrow & ask for results. Most doctors will not call unless there is a problem with the results (not very comforting if you are worrying). I would suggest you give your doc a call tomorrow & ask for the results.

I will say, though, that I've had plenty of tests that have initially shown one thing & then upon further testing turned out to be an error. So I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that that is what happened to you.

PS -- Until you know otherwise, try to focus on the more minor things it could mean. Anemia is one of those dx'es. That could also explain your cold (anemic people are more susceptible to catching colds/viruses). I know that helps me to be able to sleep when I start getting worried -- and sleep is the best treatment no matter what's going on ... even if it's just a testing mistake. :)

Hi! Thank you all for your responses. I haven't been back to get the blood checked yet..doc said with in the month and technically my month isn't up yet! I have been busy with work etc and will have to do it on my day off next Friday 6/11. It sucks that my anxiety let's me obsess over things like this. I hate letting things like this overcome come me and create such fear and panic. I know some thoughts are out of hand but still can't help but let the thoughts go there. I still feel fine except for what I know is my elevated anxiety levels. BP is normal (thank God). I've given it a ton of thought and am thinking...the first CBC that I had done where the platelets were elevated at 427 was going on 8 months ago... I had a tatoo done about a week before the blood work. I am wondering if that affected the results. I'm assuming since platelets are to clot blood they may have been higher because my back wasn't completely healed from the tattoo? Second set of blood work indicated platelets at 457 in May -two days before I came down with a very nasty virus-sore throat, ear ache etc.. I am hoping that these are resonable explinations of why they could have been high -and that they will be normal when I go back. Problem is building up the courage to go back :(

If you don't go back, you will never know. I think it is better to know now and not know later just in case somethng is wrong. But we are all praying for you that everything is okay. I don't know if gettting the tattoo had anything to do with your platelets, but you could always ask him. That way you will know. Not knowing makes us worry. That is normal. Though it does sound like you have high anxiety going on right now. Knowing too much can cause anxiety too. So don't go hunting for information on the internet. That will just scare you.
