Zoloft and Weight Gain

I have been on and off Zoloft for a few years due to panic and anxiety attacks. This last time I was on it I gained a lot of weight. I found out I have hypothyroidism and got the right medication and have that situation under control. I joined the gym and started eating healthy and my weight was still increasing. Recently I decided to stop taking the Zoloft for a while to see what would happen and in 2 weeks I lost 4 lbs already. Has Zoloft made anyone else gain a substantial amount of weight?

Hi Patricia,

Welcome to the depression forum, I am so glad that you have joined us. 

As for zoloft, I lost weight.  But it gave me severe diarhea.  So I went off of it because I was too thin anyway to be losing more weight.  But there have been many people who have posted that they gained weight off of zoloft. 

I am sure that some will post with their experiences.

I took Zoloft longer than I took any other medication. I went from weighing 135 for five years in a row....to weighing 170 by the end of the year I started taking Zoloft. So yes--I've had that experience. I've been of Zoloft for two years now and I weigh around 160...I was also on Seroquel for awhile for sleeping issues, which changed my appetite severely. Still trying to lose the weight gain from those combined meds. Dunno how anyone else feels, but if I knew I was going to gain that much weight I never would have taken any medication.

first anti-dep i was put on 20yrs ago. severe reactions. maybe a newer anti-dep will help. effexor is good for depression/anxiety. welcome 2 the forum patricia. with compassion, jamie.

Hi, I'm new here and have been taking Zoloft for about a year.  I love how it makes me feel but I'm getting really frustrated about the weight gain.  I was 135 and am now 155.  That is just not right.  I tried to cut the pills in half for a few weeks and started getting angry and worked up so I went back to the original dose.  Isn't there anything like Zoloft that doesn't cause weight gain?

I've come to find that weight gain is a side effect of almost every anti-depressant medication out there. Just have to find out if you get that side effect, the whole "trial and error" thing. Some of the meds don't cause as much weight gain as others, which is probably what your doctor will tell you if you were looking to switch medication.

Ask your doctor about Welbutrin, it isn't suppose to cause weight gain.

yea same here i Gain 32lbs in 10 month nothing worked to lose them running walking whatever i did :S
