Starting effexor...

I was diagnosed with depression today and my doctor prescribed me Effexor (37.5mg)  I plan on starting on the medicine tomorrow.   This Friday I'm going out of town for a bachelorette party.  I will be drinking quite a bit the entire weekend but I'm worried about mixing the anti-depressants with alcohol.  I know, in general, it's not a good idea to mix the two but I'm curious since I'm just starting out, so to speak, if I will experience any adverse affects?  Does it take some time for the medicine to get in your system?  Should I just wait until after the weekend to start taking the Effexor?  I do not intend to drink while on the medication once this weekend is done. (I don't drink much anyway but this weekend is kind of a big deal.)   Any advice on what to expect would be much appreciated.

Erica - I would ask your pharmacist or doctor. It sounds like it might be a good idea just to wait on beginning the medicine but I really don't know your circumstances for taking it.

Erica,

I am sure you are excited for the party this weekend and want to participate in everything including having drinks. If that is what you want why don't you wait until after

your weekend before starting your new medication. I know you should not mix alcohol

with a/d meds and you are talking about a few days. You don't know how your system

will react to the meds and alcohol so if it were me I would hold off on starting the med.

Once you start you should not drink. I am sure your dr. will tell you the same. Have fun

I have been on effexor since 2006. It is a really good drug for depression but very difficult to come off as it has a short half life so you can get some physical side effects.
I have drank (small amounts) of alcohol with effexor and have been fine but I would be very careful as you are new to this drug and you can experience side effects when starting it.
