Hi Guys. Just need a quick minute to vent. I'm angry right now. My finances have been hanging by a thread and every time I get sick or if there is some type of emergency I am just a bundle of nerves wondering how big the expense will be. So I decided to bite the bullet and apply for individual health insurance. Yes, I have major depression, but I just assumed they would put a rider on it denying me depression coverage and I would be okay else wise. But no.....I just got denied and they didn't give me a reason. This doesn't seem right. It was just catastrophic coverage I wanted. I wasn't being greedy. Just catastrophic and preventative would have been nice too. I know there are high risk pools but they are too expensive and I was just looking for a middle road to try to handle my finances responsibly.

Guess that's just asking too much here in America!

I would contact them and ask them why. Sometimes there are other categories that they can put you in. Things they don't tell you unless you ask why. I had that happen once. I think it was for life insurance. Because I took anti depressants. The guy said to recontact them and they would probably have a plan for me. I never did, I went elsewhere. But it might be something that you want to check into. I was mad because they didn't tell me I was denied or why until I called them. So try it, it might work out.

And I agree with Jamie, it is so unfair. I hope that you can find a health insurance plan.

This country needs to change. I hate that these insurance companies bully people. We need healthcare! I am sorry you got denied. The first time I got denied, I was shocked. At this point, I wouldn't even bother applying - I know I would be denied. I believe it is good to keep the denial letter. If you really can't get any insurance, you will probably be elligible for a plan through your state.

We seriously need health care reform in this country, and i don't think obamacare is really going to fix anything. I just applied for additional life insurance for me and my wife after our baby was born and we were both denied, me because of depression and my wife becuase of diabetes. I understand that we were more of a risk but i would mind paying a little more because of it, but nope just flat out denied. oh well

Thank you everybody for your replies and thoughts. Including notsosicklygirl who is from a different forum.

I read through all your responses, and Karen you had a really good - very common sense idea (which is why I probably didn't think of this)....I called the carrier a few moments ago and the denial was actually not based upon my depression. Rather, it was based upon "chronic bronchitis". Needless to say I am kind of stumped here. This is something that only happens rarely (once or twice a year). I just assumed it was depression. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any thoughts on how I should proceed? I'm assuming once other carriers know I was denied, they will deny me too.

This really **stinks**.

I would keep trying. There has to be something to help you. Maybe a state plan would help if your income is low enough. They also have programs that they don't tell you about. Such as tencon. It is for people kind of in the middle here in Michigan. I don't know what your state would call it. But it does help. So check with the department of human resources in your state.

On the a/p forum I see kitt put a low cost insurance plan. The site is for medications.

Hi Karen: Thanks for the info. about 6 months ago, kitt had posted the needymeds.org here in the depression forum. I took advantage of it right away and it has definitely made a big difference in my prescription prices.

I spent the afternoon today applying to a different carrier --Aetna, this time. Per the licensed agent bronchitis alone is not an instant denial in their underwriting process. Hopefully, they won't decide the depression is an issue. But it is supposed to be a 24 hr turnaround so I'll wait and see.

..I also looked at my state high risk pool. It would cost me $888.00 a month. That's impossible for me to afford! I guess we'll have to see if this is meant to be or not.

Cass, I am really sorry for what you are experiencing. From the outside looking in, the US does look like a land of opportunity only for the big conglomerates. Liberty doesn't seem to exist for the people, only the major corporations. It looks like you are being as resourceful as you can in a less than desirable set of circumstances and I applaud you for that. I'll be thinking of you as you keep working towards achieving a decent outcome. All the Best. Good Luck!
