My husband recently lost his job--I stupidly thought we had enough to at least survive on--he is 77 and had always worked--is a very talented engineer and I am 71--not exactly the youngest things going, but I fear we will lose our home--I worry about my animals (beloved dogs-2) and one aging horse (also beloved)---we used most of our savings to care for two sets of aging parents some years back, and never recovered from that---some days I almost feel it would be better to sleep 24/7 every day--I have cried until I have made myself ill--it is my animals that make me get up in the mornings---I am struggling---always sad--heavy heart--I feel like the Humpty Dumpty Lady--all broken, with no one to put the pieces back in place.

Welcome to the depression forum. Is your home paid for? Do you think it would benefit you to get a reverse mortgage? I don't really understand them, but you might want to look into it. I love animals. I couldn't bear to part with my dog. So I know how you feel, they do keep us going. I walk my dog everyday, and it is good for both of us. I am sure others will come up with some ideas, I will keep thinking, though my brain isn't always that good. Don't give up, take it one day at a time. You have come to a good place where you can make friends. We have a lady on here that is 83 and still going strong. Take care and have a wonderful day. Keep posting and know that we care. Can your husband draw unemployment off of that job? Had he been there long enough?

Anyhow, do keep posting...

Thank you Karen--No, our home is far from being paid for, and my husband has applied for unemployment--each day, my dogs are my motivators to even get me out of bed--it is hard to place one foot in front of the other and move, but I am forcing myself to do it--

I am glad that you have your dogs to motivate you. One day at a time hon... Things are going to work out for you and your husband...

HD Lady,

Your Animals are your saving grace at the moment!

Look into local services for senior citizens or county services that are free for Therapy. If you don't know where to look, just call a crisis line and they can hook you up. I am sure there are more people than you realize in the same position as you are.

For example, after bills this week I had 185.00 left in the checking. We are caring for my M-I-L who is 80 and has had a stroke. But some how we make it week to week.

Try not to worry about the future, concentrate on the present, try to enjoy gifts of today. Tomorrow will take care of itself. You can not control the future.

Research how to economize and it will help. One good suggestion, I shop at ALDI and the food is good and inexpensive! Get the most for your dollar!

At 77 your husband would qualify for maximum social security.  Has he applied?  Are you collecting social security?  Both checks combined should be somewhat substantial.  You really need to speak with a financial consultant and soon.  Good Luck.
