Did Effexor work for you?

I'm already on Abilify and Lexapro and now my doctor is thinking of switching me to Effexor because I am still having spells of depression and lack of motivation. I'm not sure I want to try it though. I'm scared. Anyone had experience with this medication?

when i was on it, before my re-diagnoses i found it very beneficial; moreover i found that it had the longest shelf-life than any anti-depressant i had been on....nearly tried them all!! all the best.

I took effexor for close to 20 years, it worked well for me. The xr is the best to me because it stays in your system longer.

I hope that it works for you. It can be a very good medication if it works.

I was on it only for a short period of time. It worked only a little bit, as in it was only better than nothing. I was terrified of the symptoms associated with discontinuing this medication, and so didn't stay on it long as I considered it not worth the risk. Even considering the short period of time I was on it, I still had symptoms when I stopped taking it--the most annoying of which were 'brain zaps.' Metallic buzzing like robot bees going off in my head. I am currently not on medication and desperately need something.

I am on 225xr and I feel flat. I don't cry anymore but don't feel much of anything. I have tried so many that didn't do anything i am staying on this cause it's better than nothing. i HAD very good luck with welbutrin

I had some bad side effects from effexor, but I tend to have more side effects than most people from medication.

I was on it for about 2 years. I have always had a temper, but I had a very hard time with irritability from this medication. The irritability went away when I stopped taking it.

I DID feel that it helped slightly with the depression, but it was not worth it.

Hi,

I was on Effexor XR for the longest of any anti-depressant I have been on. It treated me well for the first 4-5 months but then it started to not work as well. I was like someone else who mentioned that I just didn't feel anything. That's a very good description of what I was like on Effexor.

It also caused a little weight gain. Not to mention the severe withdrawal effects.

Now I am on Wellbutrin. It affects a different side of the brain. It doesn't have nearly the withdrawal effects as the Effexor, but it was also pretty scary transitioning to this one. I tapered from Effexor while beginning Wellbutrin and had terrible crying spells, mood swings, lack of motivation, etc. Now I am doing great. It seems to allow me to feel more human.
