I think you need to learn deep breathing too. Besides talking to your counselor. That is in through the nose and out through the mouth. It is called "smelling the roses, and blowing out the candles". And it really helps. It brings your anxiety level down and it gives you more control over how you are feeling. Meditation helps and keeps you in control. Staying mindful helps too. It keeps you from thinking about the things that make you anxious.
