Hello all. I'v been off xanax 9months as I was in a rehabilitation centre for ten weeks last june. I think I was abusing them for up to a year. I haven't touched a xanax since and My head still just feels all over the place, my memory is very bad, I feel depressed, I have no concentration, paranoid to walk anywhere on my own and I find it hard to understand theory, I just want to know does anyone else feel these symptoms? Also about 2months after getting out I started drinking again and talking harder drugs, but 3weeks ago I stopped drinking and talking drugs , I'm really determined to get on the straight and narrow. But I need to know how long or in or around how long does it take for my brain to come back to normal after xanax abuse.? I research it and read it would take about 9-18months. is this true or does it depend!

Hi Fried.com,

I had to remove some words out of your post because we aren't allowed to discuss illegal drugs on this forum.

I hope that you feel better soon. I think you should really be talking to a doctor or counselor about this matter. Especially because we cant' discuss the other drugs besides Xanax here.

It takes time to get past the withdrawal and the brain to recover. But it seems you should be feeling better by now. Drinking only makes depression worse as it is a mind depressant. So if you really want to evaluate how you are doing, stop drinking.

Oops, I see you have stopped drinking!  Kudos to you!  That is a very good thing.  It may take awhile for the effects to go completely away as alcohol is a depressant.  But you have a good start.  Keep on keeping on!

Dear Fried,

I can not answer your question, but I know it takes a lot of time and retraining of the brain.

I suggest you attend AA/NA meetings and possibly see an nutritunist that might get you back on tract,

I can tell you from experience it takes at least a year to detox both your body and your brain and that's only if your off of everything continuously for that year. As you have been in treatment you know all the rhetoric and its all true. Maybe you can just up and quit and never look back, go out with your buddies and watch them get blasted every weekend, etc. but i couldn't. Its a lot easier and lot less lonely and scary if you don't have to go through it alone, just a suggestion. Hope you find a way that works for you.

Sounds like a good plan.

As for the rules, there is a section of them if you want to read them. But basically the things that cant' be discussed is self harm, suicide, illegal drugs, even medical marijuana, swearing and religion. There are other rules, but you would have to read them. On the first page where all the different forums are, at the top of the page is the rules and stuff. If you are interested. I think I mentioned the ones that pretty much pertain to us.

Do know that you are welcome to keep discussing other things, your depression, different situations that you might need to get off of your chest. Whatever you need to talk about. We even have a thread for that too. Just talking... It is "daily check in thread". Feel free to participate there.
