we don't communicate anymore. hardly face to face anyway. i go on the bus and people are all staring at there smart (dumb) phones or tablets. i have enough tablets thanks!!! nobody talks, just staring into oblivion. at the doctors surgery, the faces of people, geez. lifeless. i know i am down and tired and all of that but come on. a couple with a baby were sitting accross and i say g'day and struck up a conversation then a lady joined in next to me. it is like people are to scared to engage. no wonder society is up you know what creek without a paddle. technology will be both the hero and bane of us. i mean there are parts of technology i love and parts that i do not. it is like anything else, moderation, nowadays it is pure bsessive madness. no face to face real life contact. no wonder some people are suffering. that is my philosophical lecture for today. now the happy turtle professor wants a 10,000 word paper on technological sufferance in society!! lol.

Oh my 10,000 words. That will be hard to do. I agree, I have a friend that comes over and is always on her phone, either texting of talking. I don't want to be that available. I would rather talk to a person face to face. But whatever floats their boats I guess.

I'm soo guilty of this. But I agree. Since the emergence of technology, people hardly communicate face to face. I think this impacts on relationships as well (family, friends, etc.).

When I use to travel, I would be digging in my phone.

I've seen people who are just a short distance away from each other but they would call or IM instead of just having a face to face conversation.

There are good things about technology but there's also some disadvantages.

Indeed! I think this promotes depression for sure. Humans are social animals, it is the way we are made.

I was reading Mays Smithsonian magazine last night and parts were so depressing. It is all about the future and the technology that will/may become available. The only heartening thing was that of the people polled 60+% thought non-human interventions were worse for change. However, there was nothing mentioned about the money to be made by the companies manufacturing the items. Also, not mention of what age group was polled. Scarey stuff, and they mentioned once again, populating Mars. Why? We have perfectly good planet here.

Like Opus, in Bloom County, I need a sit in the Perewinkle patch.

Oh, I am so far behind on all this technology! see people all the time looking down at their tablets, phones etc.

I have a basic little cell phone, a computer and that's it :)

I was so lonely, bullied and isolated as a kid, I would have loved to be able to go online and connect to thousands of people, be able to post on forums or social sites, etc! To find out there were others like me, to be able to research and learn stuff without going to the library and spend all that time looking stuff up when it can be done in an instant (or just about).

At least when the few friends I had turned their backs on me, I'd have been able to feel social and not so alone by being on the internet. To be able to blog, look up articles, stories, pictures, information.. Wow!

Of course, my family was also poor, so there was no way I'd have had any smartphone or tablet or computer, but... I think it would have greatly helped me...

And while I have never had a smart or iPhone or tablet, only use PCs and cheapie cell phones, there are not that many opportunities to talk to people, but I always say something nice to the grocer or shopkeeper or whatever...

I think a lot of us suffered when there wasn't ways to communicate. When I first got a computer, I looked up fibromyalgia on line. That is how I found the forum. Been here ever since... It has really helped and I hope it helps you too...

I agree. Those of us who grew up without, see a lot more of the benefits, perhaps?

And I was posting on forums as soon as I got my own home computer. What a joy to connect to the world from home. I am so appreciative of it... I'm going to get some internet phone as soon as I can figure out how to use them. What a thrill to be able to travel without the fear of getting lost, to check stuff online while out... I'm excited by it...

My .... what a post - or thread!!!!

   Before i get started, I want to say a few things:

1) I'm older than nearly anyone here.

2) I'm not wealthy or near it.

3) I am nearly the music dude ... as the HT.

   With that said, my idea of technology that gives back is: my set of Bang & Oulefson 4703 3-ways (40-yrs old) hooked up to my Denon system while playing "Little Wing" by Stevie Ray Vaughn at (according to my neighbor) an insane volume level. And I have one fine by the Village to prove it!!!

   Yes - of course, a computer is virtually indespensable. I have one, and it's the fourth generation fo me personally. I have no I-phone (not a big surprise to some) but I do have a basic Nokia.

   It is, at the moment, a paperweight - and not a very heavy one! It was stolen once, then returned - but, of course - it was inactive by then. I really did not use it much.

   When i was working (up to 3-years ago), I was always available to my clients or prospects from 8am to 9pm every day. I was at my home office 90% of the time. So ..... when i went out for a meeting or to eat, I did NOT want to be bothered by anyone. I wanted a few hours of peace every week. A cell phone was "big brother"!!!!

   One other cell phone story .......! I was in a relationship with someone for 7-years but on/off. She worked for the telephone company and had 9 grandkids. No way did she look the part - but she did along with 4-kids as well!

   We would once-in-awhile go on a week-end trip ..... and the last two were for my daughters graduation for her B.A. degree and then her M.A. degree the following year. My lady friend, on the last two trips said "lets' get two rooms" - thinking that she was so thoughtful for my daughters benefit.

   It just so happened my lady friend had just gotten a cell phone too. Ah-ha!!!! As I later deducted, in all my wisdom, she needed to make private calls to others - and they were not always family!!!! She only called family when we were together!!!! Got the picture????

   Yes ......... I love cell phones - and all of the deception that is made so easy with them!!!

   No comment on any other high-tech stuff ..... except all the money my IRA lost in 2002/2003 in Janus!!!

I love my Nook. I admit it, I think ereader a are some of the best things ever. I read a lot but am very low on space. My nook can hold thousands of books. I love taking it with me for dr appointments.

Cell phone sim kind of back and forth on. I screen calls. Yup, I'm one of those people. I like that my kids can reach me anytime and anywhere. Otherwise, if I don't feel like talking or texting I put the thing on silent and put it away. I do return calls but only when I want to talk. It's annoying that people can make demands on your time and expect you to drop whatever you are doing to listen to them.

I love that I can look things up whenever I want on the internet. I get on kicks where I get hooked on a subject and want to research it until my head explodes. The internet comes with negatives, too. Identity theft, predators, and justin biebers face everywhere. I guess you take the good with the bad.

When my pain levels are low then I take my cross-stitching in and work on them while waiting for the doctor, but when it's a bad day, my nook is so much easier...and on bad days I usually do not like to chat...I tend to be more of a loner type person, huge trust issues...
I will use my nook when I'm doing my exercise bike at home...and I read a book at night to fall to sleep with, regular book mostly, sometimes my nook...
It's an age of technology professor Turtle, hehehe...enjoy some of those modern items...what you should do is try to keep parents from giving kids under the age to 12 no cell phone, those they really don't need until high school...our daughter had no cell until high school....but it was a forced issues as the school called off a band practice and locked all the kids out without any means of contacting the parents, I'm still upset that happened...
