That's what I am saying. with ALL he had & still could not find something to live for, I HAVE NO CHANCE!

ShariBB- are you seeing a therapist or a psychiatrist? Are you on meds?

There IS help and relief from your depression Shari. Robin Williams was plagued with life long substance/addiction abuse issue along w/his bi polar.

I believe the saying "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." Depression may be a life long battle some of us face but their is always some way to get stabilized- meds, therapy, etc. AV said it best that depression blinds you.

If you don't have anyone to ask for help, call a hotline. Sometimes we just need someone to listen to us so we know we are not alone or crazy.

Many of us that are fighting this battle become very adept at concealing it from others. I often wonder if my family knew just how low I was. I wore a mask. It smiled for me while I was crushed and broken behind it.

The facade is so difficult to keep going. There must be an outlet, hopefully we seek someone when things get unbearable. It can save your life. It saved mine.

I feel really sad for Robin. Knowing what it feels like to be depressed. Again if you get at that low point talk to somebody. I called a hotline. They didn't know me so I told it all. Then I found this wonderful place and finally a psych, therapist and a host of medications.

All of us are here because we care, we share , there is compassion, understanding, and we aren't judged for being who we are.

I agree with you all. When I confide in people that I suffer from depression, they are shocked. I'm the joyful one, always laughing, always smiling, always supporting others.

I don't know if it's a coping skill to help me get through the day or a way to just hide it.

I do know that I've fought my way through the darkness. It was the biggest thing I've ever done- fight for me. But the light is shining on my face today. Yes, bad days occur, but they make the light so much brighter.

Thank you for starting this thread.

Robin Williams, with all his friends, family and wealth. Decided not to tell someone he was spiralling down, and no one noticed in time.

We all need to support each other, know the loved one that has depression and other diagnosis that can lead to the dark places. See the differences in behavior and start conversations about the changes.

If you think you should say something say it. Better to be embarrassed or yelled at , then to be attending a funeral days later.

Welcome to our new posters on the forum.

What hope is there for you? PLENTY! Mindfulness, DBT and CBT skills, therapy and medication. Never, Never give up. Keep trying and talking to people. You are not alone!

I normally post in the chronic pain forum, but Robin's death struck a chord in me since I have never had depression in my life until last week when after 9 weeks post op C4-7 acdf I am stuck in this collar, stuck at home, food gets stuck in my throat, stuck doing nothing because everything increases my pain...... I was so tired of pain and went to a really dark place that is new to me. Thankfully my husband talked me off the limb (and also changed meds the following day), but I understand now what all of you and others deal with, and my heart goes out to you. I wish you all that you would be given the peace to continue and whatever around you to carry on and be well.

Please at the very least find yourself a depression and/or trauma support group. If you refuse doctors this is your next best coping mech. besides this there are the daily skills.

I was abused by 4 family members for 16 yrs, so I have a good Idea what you went through. Try to find the courage to see a good trauma therapist. It will help so much.

Something that bothers me is when people that have no idea how depression really feels seem to come off a little judgmental. I'm not talking about just being a little down. I'm talking about that deep dark feeling.

I have been told it's time to get over it, or you've had long enough you should be finished with that by now. Those feelings just pushed me further. So I stopped telling the few people I could talk to.

At one point I felt as if I had been crushed into tiny bits of dust and someone just puffed and blew me away. Nobody seemed to understand that and just brushed over it.

I always get upset when someone takes drastic measures because something in their life had caused them pain. I guess it takes me back to those feelings of helplessness and despair. And nobody understands. ( or so it seems) We just have to find the right person or place.

I have a partner now that understands. I told her about my depression and anxiety. When I am feeling anxious about something she has the ability to calm me before I get to the tip that sends me into a bad place.

That being said, sometimes I still don't tell her what's going on inside. Is it that we don't want to bother people, or want to seem that we are better than we really are?

My heart grieves for the sadness that Robin and many others have inside. Even here, I feel pain when someone else is struggling.

I'm doing a little better with it though. I used to cry when I would watch a program and the person had something psychological going on. I always felt like that could be or was me. Not too sure if this is normal but it is me. Maybe I will ask the psych dr about it when I see her in a couple of weeks.


Oh well enough rambling for now.

Hello ....... and Karen please note:

   I was on the phone last night with an old friend ... and it was to see how she was doing now. You see, her son committed suicide two weeks ago. Sunday, there was a memorial visitation - then Monday morning, a mass for her son. In the Catholic belief (which is hers), he son will be darned to hell for an eternity - because of the suicide.

   My friend and I talked for a little while last night - and she said that she "had two choices - to either lean on her Faith - or to do what her son had done"! And her Faith was too strong for that.

   She had watched a program about Robin Williams the evening of her sons mass - mostly about doctors opinions. She said it made her feel good to hear what the doctors said - and I think she meant that it gave her a better understanding of what her son had been going thru ... and was, for the most part - simply hiding from everyone.

   I think before she watched that program, she was carrying around a potential ton of guilt .... thinking that it was something she did or said to her son - that may have triggered his reactions two weeks ago.

   Her son was her last living relative. No other kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters,parents, aunts or uncles .... a very small family. By the way, she had been on zoloft for the past two years - and will be going back to her therapist today. So yes .... she's experienced in depression. But, it seems her Faith is stronger.

Well said Angelic Victory. People don't understand. When I think about it I guess I didn't either.

I recall someone saying they didn't see how people could inflict harm on themselves or commit suicide.

After my worst experience I responded that I can see perfectly why. The pain going on inside is so unbearable, that decision is made to try to escape.

Yes people think we are crazy and weak. However, if they could spend a while inside our bodies. ( not just head because there are physical manifestations as well), the young would realize that we are extremely strong. Fighting through all that is going on and being able to go through daily tasks is hard work sometimes.

I wish the stigma weren't so bad. I do open up about it more to my friends now. Just can't seem to get it out to my family.

Praying for our continued strength and for all of those that feel the have no where else to turn.

Karen I think it's hard for us because we understand. He is one of our own. I get teary talking about it with you all. But would never tell anyone else that.
