I've been on the Celexa/Welbutrin combo for a few years now. Seems to work for me. For me the side effects of each seem to negate the other...
examples...
C decreases sex drive, W increases
C increases appetite, W decreases
W can increase alertness and nervousness, C calms
So basically it all balances out, if that makes any sense. Again this is what I experience, for someone else it might be different. The stimulating effect of Welbutrin seemed to lessen in time as at first I experienced some insomnia. But I still take it in the morning just in case (I take Celexa 20mg in the evening).
As for the seizure risk of taking Welbutrin, it is definitely a concern but Ive heard 300mg per day is the max dose before it starts getting into the seizure risk territory. I first started at 300mg, but recently asked for a reduction to 150mg, the reason was because of the cost issue more than anything. And after trying that new dosage I seem to still be fine, so my Dr. is continuing me with that.
The idea I believe for combining these two meds is that one acts as an adjuvant to the other, thereby increasing the overall theraputic anti-depressant effect. Of course I am no medical expert, so definitely talk to your doctor about it.
Best of luck.
