OT: Rant

As each generation says, I despair of the generation coming up now.

A gentleman told me he thought it was crazy they had to take English--he already knew it. I explained the class was more about English as a cultural context. He said he could find anything he needed from wikipedia or google, anyway.

Watched girl copying a basic worksheet for watching a film. Another gent (not wiki-guy) was over-heard to complain about the assignment because, and I quote, he had "not read the stupid book anyway."

This is an honors class in a upper-middle-class community filled with over-achieving parents and bright but lazy kids. Not all of them,of course, but some.

I swear, I am bringing in my video camera to document plagiarism.

Myself, I am not surprised, these are the same "kind" [for lack of a better word] of blooming young generation that my husband tries to hire as cooks, etc.. for the kitchen

They supposedly just finished at CIA or a culinary vocational school. Most do not know 3 types of onions or the 5 mother sauces. Ask them about cost and budget that stare at you.

and you can not read their writing. Honest, 50% or more, write across the applications. "see Resum" Leaving the E off!

John does not bother interviewing these folks. So sad.

They talk, write and spell text language.

If you cheat you aren't learning anything other than to cheat. I think it is really sad too. I remember my grandmother saying "if I could do it over and know what I know now". I would of certainly learned more than I did.

BTW Trina,my SIL says the same thing. New applicants have no useful professional writing skills. It's sad how we (the US) have failed them. It's their failure, yes, but I also really blame their teachers for not failing them for poor product, so they would understand what is needed.

UA! Good working!! I always do hard copy. But I let them know up-front that I check any suspicious content. Seriously, many students don't get how easy it is to find and how clear it is in their writing. If your read enough student writing, it stands out like a sore thumb. You have to be a really good writer to plagiarize without getting caught. Sloppy cheating skills are just stupid.

I am of the mind that if you get away with it in my class, you deserve to because you were good at it and I missed it. I catch you, though, and I highlight the areas plagiarized and print out the sources used and highlight those, and then copy the whole mess a couple of times, add a copy of the honor code, and hand it back. Then I give one copy to my department chair and keep the other. Good schools will follow through on sanctions--bad schools say they will, but don't. I offered to spearhead a department-wide database in my last job. The fact that my department head said that wouldn't be necessary when it clearly was,well, that was the beginning of the end for me.

And that's why I stated I cheated in 9th grade. It was out of desperation. My teacher was awful, and I didn't have the spatial reasoning skills to manage geometry. And, in college, during tech week for a show when we were pulling twelve hour days for a week, I used plot synopses for a play reading assignment. But all of us in that class AND the show did, we actually showed up at the library en masse on hour before Monday morning class.

I got off-track, sorry. LOL.
