A friend suggested to me to get a kitchen timer. Set it for 15 minutes. Lay on the couch and 'feel'. Listen to the seconds tick off and realize the feelings aren't killing me. When the timer goes off, get up and do something constructive...wash the dishes or take out the trash. When the chore is accomplished, if I needed to, reset the timer. I've spent many a day on the couch with the timer ticking away...crying, screaming into a pillow, rocking...but I've always gotten up when the timer goes off and done something constructive. Not only did this show me that my feelings are valid...they aren't killing me...and I can keep my home from chaos, regardless of how I feel on any particular day.
