New (FDA approved) drug Patch for depression - Selegiline

I saw a post on another board about this and researched - there is a new FDA approved Drug patch called Selegiline (Ensam) for major depression.  Has anyone heard of this or is currently on this?  I found the link on it, and it looks very promising.  I am pretty excited and feel very hopeful about this new type of treatment for depression.  I wonder if there would be the same side effects as antidepressants in pill form?

Hey Rianna,  I did see this medication was approved by the FDA for use.  It looked like the only draw backs were skin irritation and problems with low blood pressures in certain patients.  It looks to be a promising medication.  I think it is good that they are trying to come up with alternatives to pill forms of antidepressants.  I know that the problems with taking so many pills is that people don't drink enuf liquids to ensure that the medication is completely swallowed.  Often times pills end up dissolving in the esophagus and causing acid reflux problems and ulcers.  Anyway, I have rambled enuf....take care

I am going to ask My Doctor about it next time I go in. ELS, that may be a good reason, as to why my chest is burning after I started on the Remeron. They did all sorts of tests on me, and everything came back negative (EKG, etc). I only take a couple of sips of water when I take my medication. I did not know to drink more water when taking pills.

Oh yeah it is a huge problem, I know I sometimes can feel that my pills all 15 of them get stuck in my throat and I don't take them all at once.  Gross huh?  It is a good idea, I wonder if insurance is covering it yet?  I would also be curious as to the effectiveness of a persons body weight, would they have to have a higher dosage if they weighed more?  The ortho evra patch starts to be less effective in people that weigh over 175 pounds and doctors don't recommend it for patients above 215 at all.  I guess only time will tell.  Let us know what the doctor says if you do ask him about it.  Take care....

Oh my goodness..15 pills?  Gosh..now I feel bad for complaining that I have to take two pills.  I would be interested to learn more about the patch as well.  Looking forward to seeing more articles.
