Sorry, I don't know what to tell you about meds because I have always had good success with them.  I can say that if your doctor isn't much help, get a new doctor.  It is his/her responsibility to be able to help and if he/she doesn't know enough about your issues to treat you competently you need to find someone who can.  Yes, I realize that this is not always easy, but it is always worth it when you find the right person.

Hi Sarah,  Welcome to the depression board!  I too have had depression for many years and thought that the only two medications I had any real success with were Zoloft and Luvox.  Both of these were prescribed by my Primary Care Physician.  This past year I had some serious medical problems occuring and the Zoloft quit working for me, my PCP referred me to a psychiatrist who put me on Effexor Xr.  I was very hesitant to start it as I have worked in the mental health field for many years and have certificates in medicaiton administration and was familiar with the side effects of the drug.  But after relenting to his advice, the Effexor has worked beautifully at helping with my depression. So, my suggestion is also that you deferr to your physicians advice...but perhaps if your not seeing a Psychiatrist for your antidepressants and follow-up care them you seek out one.  They really are the only physicians that are most current on these type of drugs and what may be best for you.  Please do keep us updated and feel free to post here as often as you like, we would love to hear more from you.  Take care
