I'd like to recommend a book called "The Chemistry of Joy," by Henry Emmons. Emmons is a psychiatrist who is also well versed in ayurveda and buddhist principles. He advocates mixing the best of what the eastern and western philosophies and approaches to medicine have to offer in the treatment of depression. He is not against medications when needed, but strongly advocates working with diet and lifestyle to support medication or work your way to reducing dosage or even get off medication. Sounds like a million other books out there, right? Well, it is actually very well written and practical and not a bunch of gobbledy gook.
