Hello Everybody,
I have posted here in the past about my brother who has been suffering from depression for
almost 6 months now. A few weeks after it began he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and he was given 10 sessions of ECT. During that time he walked out of hospital twice and attempted suicide twice and was therefore place in the ICU unit. When he was discharged from hospital in March the doctor still wanted him to continue the ECT treatments about once a week, but my brother became so frustrated with the memory loss associated with ECT that after 2 more treatments of ect, he stopped having them. He has been at home since March and sees a psychiatrist regularly, but to date there has been little to no improvement. He is on meds. but cries daily and he has this obsesion about wanting desperately to work now although he has not worked for many years now. He lives together with my elderly parents and it is having a very bad effect on their health. Whenever I see him at my parents he will talk with me about his worries concerning work and like most people, I have told him to try and forget about work until he is better. He will acknowledge that this is the best thing to do for now and then the next day he will be crying for hours about his lack of work. I feel totally at a loss as to what the family should try to do as the next step. The hospital where he was a patient has people who come and visit patients at home to help them return to the normal routine ,but he has refused to accept their help. My wife suggested that he should be supported in finding some sort of temporary work; but I believe he is in no condition for even voluntary work which his doctor has suggested.
Please; to anyone who has perhaps gone through something similar; perhaps you can suggest what the next step should be.
