J,
Metformin works much the same as exercise to fight diabetes. It enhances your body's ability to utilize your own insulin and helps you move glucose into the cells where you need it for energy. When I was first put on it my doctor told me concerning carbs, "If you overdo you'll go POOH!" and he was right! I get bad diarrhea if I eat rice or potatoes or any amount of starch.
Many of us here are type2's and on a low carbohydrate food plan that includes lots of veggetables, lean meats, olive oil, avocadoes, nuts and some healthy fruits. We have found this an easier way to control blood sugar as well as a good way to lose weight. Your mileage may vary. If you read back in the posts you will learn a whole lot about
how we help each other stay on track. Accepting diabetes isn't fun, but it may be the best thing that ever happened to you in the long run. You will learn better ways to stay healthy and eat better and make a whole lot of great new friends here on the diabetes forum at HealingWell. (Well some of us are great.... and some of us are just goofy
)
Anyway, welcome. You probably have lots of questions so we will help all we can.
