dad in hosp, BS 520, edema, not peeing

My dad went into the hospital last night with blood sugars at 520.  They checked him in and gave him  insulin - and it dropped to 195 fairly quickly.  He's wavered all night but averaged 200.  Of course, he was extremely dehydrated when he went in so he got 4 IVs during the night.  This morning he has very bad edema and can't seem to pee.  They gave him lasix (sp) but still hasn'ted pee'd even after 3 hours.  He gets extremely out of breath when lying down or walking to the bathroom.  So, they were worried about congestive heart failure - however, his blood pressure is fine. 

Anyone have similar experience?

Been there, done that. I went into the hospital with bg of 827 and dehydrated in October. Had IV's of insulin and to hydrate. Took a week to get settled down.. He is in the best place for him. Was he diabetic before or newly diagnosed? How old is he? My diabetes was new to me when I went into hospital. I am doing great now. My prayers are with your Dad and family. Good luck:)

Stay positive and do all you can to help calm the rest of the family. Dad is in the right place as Ceebee said. Just let the doctors do what they do best and you hang in there. Sending prayers for a quick recovery. Take care.

Thanks - turns out he may have done some damage by not taking care of himself. The lasix finally kicked in and he is peeing again. However - one wall of his heart is only working 22% and they are doing kidney and liver tests today. He'll be fine - they just have to figure out how to treat him. HOpefully he'll go home in a couple days. thanks again - Raea

Uncontrolled diabetes does organ damage and actually changes the make up of the blood vessel walls. It also affects our ligaments and tendons, predisposing us to sprains and strains. There's a lot more to this than just high blood sugar. He will need a lot of diabetes education to learn how to care for himself and your mom will need to learn new ways to purchase foods and prepare them. If possible, see if you can attend the patient teaching classes that he may be offered, along with your mother. Two heads are better than one at listening to all the new stuff and the new food plans, meds and testing can be a bit overwhelming at first.

PLEASE send dad to our forum so we can help him find his way thru this beginning stage of his disease. We can help him adjust, learn and actually get strong enough to FIGHT diabetes so he can get as healthy as possible. We will work with him, mom and your siblings to help you understand and be proactive about diabetes. The more you learn, the better it will be for you, especially since you are at high risk to become diabetic as well. Hang in there, girlfriend and we will help all we can. Still sending prayers.
