Hi, I don't usually visit the Diabetes board but I was told that someone here might be familiar with PCOS. I'm going in for an ultrasound next week and getting some blood tests done. Is there anything I should be prepared for? I don't know what to expect. I have almost all the symptoms of PCOS but I do have rather regular and very painful periods, which I think might rule it out. I don't know what else could be causing me so much pain every month! Thanks, any advice or experience is welcome. Take care.

You can have PCOS and have regular periods. PCOS doesn't necessarily cause painful periods but if your hormones are out of whack that could cause some pain. You should be checked for insulin resistance. Some doctors have you take a 4 hour glucose tolerance test. If you are overweight, a low(er)-carb diet should help.

Endometriosis can cause painful periods. Unfortunately, the only way to diagnose it is with surgery. Adenomyosis is another cause of painful periods.

Hi, I have diabetes and PCOS. I do have some of the other symptoms you have described. For close to the last year I have been treated for the irregular periods and painful periods. My periods would be so bad I could barely walk without being in pain. I dont believe that the pain is tied to my PCOS, at least no doctor has tied the two together. I was treated for endometriosis because of the painful periods, but like someone stated the only way to be sure is the surgery. I had the surgery a couple months ago. In my case they turned out to be ovarian cysts. 4 times I've had laproscopic(sp?) surgery to remove them. Ultrasound showed them every time. It's an easy procedure in that prep consists of achieving a full bladder before the test. The pressing of the ultrasound wand on your full bladder can be uncomfortable but it's over in 5-10 minutes. Don't expect the technician to disclose any info about the results; a follow-up appointment with your doc usually takes place.

I've been spoiled. My gyn does an internal ultrasound (no full bladder required) whenever I need one and we discuss the results immediately.

I had my ultrasound today. The doctor said he didn't see anything to be worried about but I need to wait for him to review it more closely.

Wondering why I have such painful periods! Everything about my body is such a mystery to me.

I also have PCOS. According to my doctor and my obgyn PCOS can be associated with painful periods, ovarian cysts and diabetes. Approximately 40-60% of people with PCOS develop diabetes. It is part of a syndrome called metabolic syndrome and is associated with hormones and how our metabolism functions. I was treated for PCOS with metformin long before I developed diabetes and it helped for a number of years. Ultimately, I did wind up with a hysterecomy because the cysts became persistent and cancer could not be ruled out (thankfully, there was no cancer).

Two months ago I had an ultra internal ultrasound. I was asked to go to the toilet before the scan because it had to be done on an empty bladder. The results were discussed with me a week later when my blood test results came back. The ultrasound didn’t show anything wrong but my blood tests showed I had elevated levels of testosterone and LH (luteinizing hormone). The doctor told me it was caused by insulin resistance and I was prescribed Metformin.

My advice is not to rely on a scan alone, ask your doctor for the following blood tests:
- Female sex hormones (at a certain point in the cycle if possible)
- Male sex hormones
- Sex-hormone-binding globulin
- Glucose
- Thyroid function tests

I was diagnosed with PCOS about one month ago and I am insulin resistant. My biggest problem is extreme morning sickness every day. Does anyone else experience this and have advice as to dealing with it? I'm taking Metformin - which the doctor said would help- but it's not helping at all.

welcome, elp.  The metformin might be causing the nausea (you said morning sickness - you're not pregnant are you?)  I know that metformin will cause these reactions if you eat a lot of carbs.  What are you eating?  When are you supposed to take the metformin?  Have you told your doctor about the symptoms?

PCOS (lanie this is on personal experience) is not really a big sweat. It just basically means you have cysts on your overaries and if you get pregnant you need to be monitored a bit more closely. The menstration issues is jsut one of the many signs of PCOS. Pre diabetes also goes with PCOS. I learned this in my "you have PCOS" talk :p
