Accu Chek Aviva Reading - Convert or Not?

Hello Everyone - Please help!

Is Accu Chek Aviva calibrated to give a Plasma result when compared to lab result? If not plasma calibrated, then I need to convert (multiply by 1.12) to compare to lab result.


I swithed to Accu Chek from One Touch Ultra early this year because Accu Check is less painful. I called Accu Chek today for my "plasma" question.  The lady had no clue. All she knows is the 20% accuracy range.

One Touch Ultra is "plasma calibrated' so no conversion is needed. However, there is no such information available regarding this on Accu Chek's website or in their manual. That makes me anxious because my testing results could be 10% lower, on top of the 20% range.

Mip, I don't know how to help you.  Could you call AccuChek back and ask to speak to one of their "technicians" - or someone who is more knowlegeable than the person answering the general questions?  I'm making a wild guess that if their website and manual don't mention it, then the glucose monitor would already be calibrated to give a plasma result?  Actually, I was never aware of this being an issue.  I only knew that monitors' accuracy could be off up to 20%, though most are probably lower than that.  One thing I don't understand is that you changed monitors because AccuChek is less painful.  I believe all lancets have little dials to shorten or lengthen the point so it doesn't stick you too hard.  Is that what you mean?  Sorry I can't help more.

It says the Aviva is "whole blood calibrated", unlike some of the others that say "plasma calibrated" (like the One Touch).

One of the things to note - this information should also be found in the TEST STRIP package information; not the glucose meter's info. It's the test strips that determine which it is.

I called Accu Chek again and had another lady answering my question. I asked "Does Aviva deliver plasma-like results?" She said a firm "yes".

And then I said "so there is no conversion between Aviva results and lab results, right?" She seemed confused by "conversion" and repeated that Aviva delivers plasma-like results.

I think the representatives need more training on whole-blood and plasma results. And also on how to compare Aviva results to lab results.

My conclusion: You do not need to multiply 1.12 when comparing Aviva results to lab results, though Aviva does have a 20% accuracy range.

I think One Touch does a much better job to explain this on their website. And I will check the test strip inserts again.
