Remember when....

- Coke was sold in 6.5 ounce bottles (the 50's introduced 10, 12, & 26 oz options)
- TV Dinners were 'fast-food' and a treat as kids the once or twice a year Mom & Dad were going out
- when chips & pop came home with the groceries, you knew Mom & Dad were having a party
- dinner plates were a reasonable size (about the size of our modern day dessert plate)
- a cup of coffee was a CUP of coffee
- today's "Super Sizing" would've been a "side" order for the whole family
- today's "mini muffins" used to be considered normal sized
- a serving of pasta was about a cup (not the 5 cups average they are now)
- an "appetizer" was NOT the size of an entree
- sandwiches for the week were made from Sunday's leftover roast

... and many more ways our society has changed over the past 50 (short) years. I'm sure you all have something to add :-)

- Milk was delivered in bottles by a horse and wagon. The horse wore a hat with holes for the ears and the milk man would chip off chunks of ice for the children to suck on if the day was hot.
- Everyone's house had a coal chute that went to the coal bin
- You could run down the street to a friend's house and yell from the street, "Debby Lou! Can you come out?" and she would yell back from inside.
- Whole chickens for Sunday dinner
- Push lawn mowers that didn't have motors
- Rakes for leaves instead of those stupid blowers with their aggravating whine in the motors
- Gas station guys that came out and filled your gas, checked your oil and washed your windshield
- Penny candy
- S & H green stamps
- Skate keys
- Your brothers stealing your skates to make a skate board
- Tree forts
- Kick the can
- "You have to come home when the street lights come on."

Jeannie, that's really nostalgic!  Kris, your list is the sad truth of what's helped push some of us to be overweight before we knew it.

- no shopping on Sundays because...

- no malls!  (and it was a day for the church and family)

- victory gardens in the backyard  (I'm older than you guys.)

- riding your bike everywhere, walking everywhere or taking public transportation - kids didn't have cars in high school!

- jumping rope, hopscotch, stick ball, tag, hide 'n' seek - not video games

- to continue Jeannie's thought:  clipping hedges with manuel clippers, edging with a manuel edger, using a hoe and weeding with hands: no chemicals or motorized yard tools

Ok.  Now, pull yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.  We'll get back on track.  yeah

....and in Scotland we enjoyed our Mars Bars 'au naturale' rather than deep fried. Ah the good old days.

An uniquely Scottish contribution to world cuisine. Basically, bring us whatever you like and we'll find a way to deep fry it for you.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh deep fried candy.....in canada they also have deep fried twinkies....I want to try the mars bar or the twinkie....but resist everytime!!!!  Now I DOOOOO want some idea    Bet it is out of this world delicious!!! yeah

 

LOL TV, I second that...I want to....but so far....I havent turn

Ah...we folks who live in the deep south and in rural areas know about fried Mars bars (and Snickers, and 3 Muskateers (sp)), fried twinkies, fried peanut butter and banana sandwhiches too.

Also, peanuts in your Coca Cola

Remember when you didn't have to worry about eating any of these tasty treats.  yeah Before you didn't have to watch everything you eat.  A nice big piece of chocolate cake with tons of chocolate frosting with a big glass of milk sure brings back old memories of yesteryear.  yeah  I guess we all can dream of somethings we used to enjoy eating before we were diabetic.

Ahhhhh, the good ole days.  Too bad our kids will never know the joys of our youth.  They would be better off I think.

I agree. Kids today would be better off if they experienced the joys of our youth. My little grand niece (almost 7) has her own cell phone!

On the up side, remember when...

~ your blood testing supplies consisted of a small suitcase that contained a meter the size of a small VCR, lint-free paper towel to blot with, took 5 minutes to develop a result, and a portable sqeeze bottle to wash off the excess blood from your strip (that came out of a large bottle) for at least 2 minutes of continuious water flow.
~ your insulin must be refrigerated at all times as it came form a cow or pig and would break down
~ your MUST eat at 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, and 10pm or face the consequenses of having to explain a hypoglycimic reaction to anyone around you WHILE suffering the symptoms
~ you had to carry a pouch to hold your alcohol swabs, needles, vials of insulin, and cotton swabs
~ you had to convince your teacher (boss, frinds, co-workers, etc) that you HAVE TO EAT NOW or they will get hurt if they get in the way!
