Apart from the negative aspects of diabetes, I've found this experience so far to be a real eye-opener. The more I read, the more I find out things like the eczema/diabetes connection.
Both these and many other problems are apparently the result of the immune system gone wonky (let me know if I use too many big medical terms ;-) A buddy of mine who takes Metformin (I think?) says it really worked for him until a little while ago when he developed a flu-like condition that lasted 6 weeks. His doctor told him that one of the things the Metformin does is to slow down or control the immune system so that it will do less damage to kidneys, etc. The downside is that it also makes you more succeptible to simple diseases and infections, hence the importance of flu shots.
I've never had a flu shot and didn't get one this year but interestingly, I was one of a very small number of people who avoided the wave of a particularly virulent flu strain that went through our offices (there were a couple of cases of pneumonia that resulted). I think the reason I got lucky was due to my making even a slight change in lifestyle -- losing weight, changing diet, moderate exercise and taking a daily multi-vitamin.
Editior's note: I will probably get the flu shots in the near future depending upon the progress (digress?) of my diabetes.
Heard an interesting radio show the other day -- a local doctor pops in once a week and reports on studies that are going on. He is quite open about the fact that some doctors aren't as up-to-date as they should be regarding tests & trials but some others, like himself, follow the literature diligently and are on the lookout for simple, effective cures and fixes. During this recent show, he told about an obesity/weight loss trial conducted mainly to test a certain drug or some other purpose but unexpectedly after the results were analysed, it was found that those in the reduced weight catagory had fewer instances of just about every type of malady, not due to the the drug being tested but rather just the weight loss. Bad for the drug company ... good for us
He said it was found that certain types of fat (not the visible beer gut type ... a layer behind that) stores toxins and excesses of hormones among other things. So simply put, the more fat you have, the more bad things you are storing.
Another gold star for common sense
