Hi Y'all. Seeing that someone asked about
the gum...I've wondered about
that, too. I also wonder about
diet soda. I've been drinking a diet pepsi three or so times a week. I'm also unhappy to say that my FBG has gone up again. I was getting 100-105 and have been getting 111-120 for a little over a week now. I've been having lots of anxiety and not sleeping well lately...I guess that could have something to do with my FBG. I wonder if the diet pepsi is doing it as well. my PP numbers are always fairly good...125 and below. I'm pre diabetic and not on meds. Joni

What about
Coke Zero? Have you tried that? I just bought some and will test it this weekend.

Some of the sugar substitutes in "diet" drinks are worse than others. Keeping in mind that they are ALL chemical concoctions of one formula or another - they're not natural. In the diet colas there is also the caffeine to consider. That can have an effect on BGLs without the sugar alcohol mix. I will have some diet drink occasionally but about
1/4 Cup at a time (say 1/4-1/3 can). I really feel bloaty after more than that.

There are a lot of claims that the artificial sweeteners, especially aspertain (sp), can have a negative effect on blood sugar, especially in people who are diabetic or "pre" diabetic. To date the FDA is saying that these sweeteners are 100% safe and there is no proof of their negative effects, but to be honest I don't think any definitive study has been made.
It is possible that artificial sweeteners can effect one person bad and have no effect on another. I suggest you do a little test. Stop using them or having anything with them in there for a week and see what happens. Then you will have an idea how they effect you.

Thank you all for replying to my questions. I'm going to stop drinking diet drinks period and see what happens. I wasn't drinking them when my FBG was lower and it's worth not drinking them to see if my sugar lowers again. I can't help but think something in the diet drinks is causing my high FBG because it seems to have started when I started drinking them. Joni

Joni,
Something I've found to substitute for the artificially sweetened drinks is iced sun tea made with 3 regular tea bags and one mint tea bag to each quart of water. (I actually make this on the counter with hot tap water but the idea is the same. No boiling.) The mint makes the tea refreshing and cool and it doesn't need sugar. Worth a try.
