Hi Pin Cushion. First, when do you take your Lantus? Part of your high am reading may be due to the Lantus not lasting for the entire 24 hours. I know of many people who have a problem with it. Most of them go to a split dose, taking part of their dose in the morning, and the rest in the evening. They have better morning readings that way.
Splitting the dose may not totally fix the problem. I've had type 1 diabetes for 40 years and have had a problem with the dawn phenomenon for as long as I can remember. No mattter what I tried, it didn't work. My only real solution came last November when I started the insulin pump. I've programmed the pump to deliver extra insulin starting at 4 am and continuing until 8 am and the problem has pretty much disappeared. Unfortunately, delivering insulin by injection does not do as good a job.
I know pumps are expensive, but for most people they work a whole lot better than anything else.
