Not even sure though doc says I am diabetic

Hi I am very new to this just found out yesterday I am diabetic.  How can you get diabeties I exercise daily either walking or the gym and eat healthy and weigh 125????

My A1C was 6.5 is that normal from what I was reading some sites say that is good and some say should be under 6.

Before dinner last nite my blood sugar was 112, after it was 146 and all I had was chicken.  This am my sugar was 126.

Right now I do not think I have it in my opinion its not that high.

Welcome to the Forum.  My first suggestion is that you need to read up on diabetes and blood sugar.  An A1c of 6.5 is equal to an average blood sugar of 140.  A person who is tests 126 or above fasting more than once would be diagnosed as diabetic according to the ADA.  A person who doesn't have diabetes will have fasting blood sugar under 100.  What your blood sugar readings mean to me is that you have trouble metabolizing carbohydrates and you may be a mild diabetic.  In short your blood sugar readings are too high.  Diabetes strikes all body types, so even if you are fit and of normal weight, it may still have diabetes.  How old are you?  What do you normally eat in a day, for each meal?  Do you have any family history of diabetes?  Stay with us and please read through our old posts. 

I will be 45 in 3 weeks.

During the day I eat a bowl of special k in the morning, midmorning an apple or yogart and for lunch either a salad with low cal dressing, chicken, tomatos and a little shredded cheese, dinner I eat chicken and a vegatable or sometimes I skip dinner because I go to the gym usually after work and by the time I get home I am not hungry from drinking water. Lots of water I drink during the day. I moved from PA to CO the end of April.

Also before I ate healthy and exercised daily but had a tuff time taking of 10 lbs then I read up on Alpha Lipoic acid pills and started taking them last year and did lose some but just over the past few months the wight just started coming off pretty quick and easy and I had no idea why.

Congratulations on the weight loss and starting a healthier lifestyle!  That's the best thing you can do for yourself and for the family because it will keep you in better health for longer.  And in the case of diabetics, it may avoid complications.  You're already familiar with what high blood sugar over an extended period of time can do: circulation problems, neuropathy may lead to amputation; kidney problems, heart problems, vision.  Depending on what source you use (ADA, your own doctor, various articles), you'll find that some say these problems can be caused from blood sugar averaging 140 and higher or 150 and higher.  I believe we just don't know how we're individually affected.  However, as I said, the ADA recommends that diagnosis of diabetes begins with fasting of 126 or higher at least twice or at random times.  Another tool for diagnosis is the glucose tolerance test in which you fast overnight and then take a glucose drink in the lab and they test your blood for 1 or 2 hours afterward.  This is probably the best test to see how you metabolize carbs.  With your present lifestyle of the exercise and diet, it seems to me any person would either keep losing weight or maintain (depending on the amount eaten).  And the blood sugar should be 'normal' but your readings are too high for what you're eating and doing - which makes me think you caught yourself on the tip of diabetes.  To bring your blood sugar down, you could just do a few changes in what you're eating.  Breakfast: scrambled eggs and some turkey bacon; snack is half an apple with the skin and a couple of wedges of cheese; great lunch!  Make sure the dressings doesn't have a lot of carbs.  Salad dressings are a bad source of sugar sometimes and the "lo-cal" ones can be the worst.  A simple olive oil and lemon juice/vinegar is best for that.   Make sure your vegetables are not potatoes!.  I think if you cut down on the carbs more, your readings would come down too.  Have you been talking to your doctor? 

Maybe I am in denial right now I just don't think I am diabetic is that normal?

Some diabetics have problems with high blood pressure but not all.  It's not a diagnosis of diabetes.  Untreated type 1 diabetics may indeed lose lots of weight.  That's because their bodies don't produce insulin to help the glucose in the blood get into the cells for energy.  Over time, the person loses weight because the body is using body muscle for energy because it thinks it's starving.  Yes, I think you're in denial.  Your blood sugar readings are important.  You're eating pretty low-carb right now but your blood sugar is running higher than it should if you're not eating carbs.  The only way to determine whether or not you're diabetic is to have the GTT - the glucose tolerance test.  That will tell you and the doctor whether or not you can metabolize carbohydrates.  I know it's hard to understand all this at first.  This is why you need to do a lot of reading about diabetes and ask questions.  (When you post and then think of another question soon afterwards, you can go back to your post and 'edit' it.  This allows you to add the question or comment that you forgot to the post.  The edit icon is a little pencil in the upper right corner of each post.  This way, you don't have to keep writing little posts because you just forgot something.)

It's normal if you're a diabetic, probably a mild one.  A nondiabetic would not have a blood sugar reaction like that.

I ate turkey bacon for breakfast and egg beaters this am for breakfast, I have been feeling dizzy all day today and checked my sugar and it is down to 85. can that be my problem maybe with my sugar?????

Gosh this diabeties thing is alot of work I guess a life time thing right? I just dont understand how I lost weight just like that, I thought it was from stress moving from PA to CO or the change in elevation. The only reason why I found out was because I was having stomach pains 1 wk and went to my new doctor here and she did blood work and my triglycerides were high and she ordered a fasting blood sugar, then went home to PA last month to visit and checked my sugar with the meter and it was up to 220 then went for a FBS when I got back which was elevated and then went for my A1C which was elevated.

I don't have a follow up appointment for 2 wks on Oct 6th I start my classes for diabeties

Yes, diabetes is a lifetime condition and it varies with the person.  It means your body is not metabolizing carbohydrates normally so you have high blood sugar.  If the blood sugar remains high and is uncontrolled, some of your body organs can be damaged.  If you can still control the blood sugar with diet and exercise, that's great.  If not, then you'd go on medication.  What is considered high?  Fasting over 125 on more than one occasion would be diabetes according to the ADA.  Same with a random test any time of the day.  A nondiabetic will hardly go over 100 most of the times but it he/she does, the blood sugar recovers quickly and goes back to normal.  Interestingly, the ADA has "normal" parameters for diabetics and will tell you that it's acceptable to have up to 130 or 140 two hours after a meal.  I don't think this is in the best interest of the patient.  We should have much lower than that.  This is where you'll find differences when you are counseled in a nutrition class set up by ADA guidelines and why I stopped attending.  However, this is your choice and why I encourage you to learn everything you can about this and to read our older posts.  You should be concerned that you had a reading of 220.  The more carbs you eat, the higher the blood sugar will be, and this is why you need to test in the morning and 2 hours after a meal to see what the blood sugar is.
