My meters disppointed me!!

I just came back from doc's appointment. Tested fasting and A1c:

Fasting - 100

A1C - 5.6%

I was shocked when I heard 100 from my Endo. I tested multiple times this morning, before and after the appt.

7:00a - 79 (meter)

9:15a - 84 (meter)

10:30a - 100 (lab)

11:15a - 92, 87, 87 (three different meters at the same time)

So if you use the numbers from the meters, I am perfect. But lab number is not.

However my Endo is not concerned. He said the lab range is 65-100, so I am normal. A1c is good. And because they took my blood 10:30a in the morning, even I am fasting, my blood sugar rises as the day goes.

Oh, I am so disappointed after all the diet watch and exercise that I have done. My fasting is higher than last year (92).

Oh Mip, I understand your disappointment.     But the A1c is great!  And, yes, the blood sugar would rise on its own as the morning goes on even if you're fasting.  If the lab had tested you at 8:00 a.m., I'll bet you would have been lower than 100.  All your attention to diet and exercise has paid off, honest!  You're doing great! 

 

That depends on what 'normal' is and who says it!  A non-diabetic would have an A1c around the numbers that your Endo's lab says, but for some reason other labs (like the one my doctor's office uses, Quest) say their 'normal' is under 6.  Yet, some members here on the forum have said their doctors want under 6.5, so you can see why there's confusion all the time.  The best plan is to continue what you're doing to get your A1c in the 5 range.  (my nonprofessional opinion)

I'm a newbie here, so I hope I'm not too late to get into this thread.

You have to remember that meters are making a number of educated guesses in coming up with the numbers. They're trying to convert from the whole blood that they use for testing to plasma numbers which come from the lab, and that can be as much as a 15% correction. Also, the lab test has about a 4% variation, so last year's 92 and this year's 100 may not actually be any different.

The A1c issue is that there are only about 15 labs in the world which are certified to run A1c's and all are with big clinical research centers. That's why they can't use A1c for a diagnosis-because there's a difference in labs. Basically, if this one is lower than the last one, you're on the right track.

I'm newly-diagnosed and incredibly impressed at how much work you've obviously put into taking control. I hope I'm that dilligent. I go in for my three-month testing in a couple of weeks, so I guess I'll find out!
