So I just started insulin a couple of days ago. So I have found that on insulin, every few hours I start feeling like I need to eat. So I decided I have to start eating breakfast. In the past, I would either skip breakfast or sometimes have string cheese and dill pickles. My other meals I ate sporatically, sometimes eating only once a day. So this morning, my husband who has had diabetes for 15 years, asked for oatmeal. He generally has this once a week along with a piece of toast with peanut butter. He says he feels good with that breakfast. So I decided that I would be healthy and have a bowl of instant oatmeal (18 carbs) and along with it, had one serving of nuts and 2 dill pickles. about 20 minutes later I started sweating and felt terrible. My glucose had gone from 217 to 389 in that short time. So as each day goes by, I am learning what my body can tolerate and what it can't. Today I learned that oatmeal is out of the question for me. I really think I am better off eating my low fat string cheese and dill pickles for breakfast. Even before I had issues with my bg, I have never felt good eating carbs in the morning. This response is exaggerated now when my bg is so high.
