Lantus is a "background" insulin - meaning, it's taken to regulate blood sugar levels REGARDLESS OF FOOD. The humalog insulin is used to to address his food consumption. If he's not eating then you are correct, there is no need to inject humalog. The Lantus should still be taken but, you may want to double check with his doc on the dosage if he's been ill for a couple of days. The last thing you want to happen is for him to go hypoglycemic so, lowering the dosage a unit or few might be temporarily required to avoid that. Keep checking his blood glucose levels.
When I have a hard time eating, I turn to Boost (diabetic Boost) or Glucerna. They're meal replacement drinks for diabetics and I find that I can sip some of it and know I'm at least getting some nutrition. I will inject my background insulin no matter what but, I will check my BGL many times throughout a sick day to make sure I'm on top of my control.
If he's still as ill after a few days (i.e. not improving or getting worse), call the doc for advice.
