Cold insulin.. An idea to try.

I take my insulin once a day in the evening. At my class I was instructed to warm the insulin by rolling the vial in my palms for a few minutes... I don't know about you but this seemed almost useless! Last night, quite by accident I was delayed by a phone call after I had already drawn up my insulin. I left the syringe on the counter while I took the call. When I got back to it and did the injection there was a lot less stinging. I think the insulin had warmed up to room temp (I talk a lot!) while I was on the phone because there was such a small quantity in the syringe. So now I'm going to try to draw my meds after I finish the dishes and then it should be warm by the time I need to do the shot.

Anybody else want to try this?

Eeuwwwwww! Warren keeps his insulin in his armpits! Isn't that where boy cooties come from?

I know that they told me I could keep my insulin at room temp, but without insurance I'm using my entire vial so I have to keep it in the fridge. I can't afford to throw it away after a month. My doctor told me to keep it refrigerated and just be sure to check my numbers every morning to be sure it's still active. So far it's working.

Jeannie, I actually use my whole vial too. I've only maybe once in 24 years had to throw one out after a month. They usually last me 1 1/2 to 2 months, they just tell you it's no good after 1, but i've basically never had a problem. HTH Robyn

Gotta bump this up for the newer members! Every evening when I place my insulin syringe under my arm I think of Warren... and the visual of AL's needle chicken is a light note in my busy day.

the Chicken is good. I have a big door pocket on the drivers side. I know whats in there so I never just put my hand in as there are between 30 and 100 psent syringes in that pocket some capped some not. It is very much a mess with at your own risk situation. I got pulled over on the highway for a broken tail light once. The office asked if he searched would he find anything. I said go ahead but be very carfull of the drivers side pocket as it was loaded with spent syringes. Then I had to explain that I was not a junkie. My first response was "how many junkies are 20 lbs overweight?" Apparently he had busted a real junkie a few days earlier that was even more overweight 8^P, all I could do was laugh.

Cold insulin sucks. When I was on Humalin R and L I worked out a age of bottle = slightly bigger shot curve that worked pretty well. I had noticed that as the bottle aged ( mostly in a pocket ) that I needed more to get the same results. After some testing I had it all worked out. For a while though my doseages were very very very small. 3/4 am 3/2 pm I had bells palsy at the time and my weight had fallen off a cliff leaving me at the bottem of the normal weight range. I was pretty amazed by the low doesages. Also I found myself putting them in the fridge as the bottles were lasting closer to 80 days. I think I peaked at 100 days but my doseages were even smaller. I dont think pocket carrying would have been helpful then. Of course doing shots totalling 3 or 4 units made the fact that the insulin was cold alot less noticeable.
