cozaar for bp used for diabetics

I recently moved and had to find a new dr.  He has put me on cozaar  a b/p med for diabetes.. His reasoning is that a diabetic should have a b/p of 130/80 or lower and the cozaar protects the kidneys from damage from diabetes.  I am T 2.... anyone else taking this medication  for these reasons?  It's really dragging me down. Makes me to tired to do anything and  I belong to curves and I have to make myself go.  Also while I'm exercising I can't get enough air in my lungs.  That seems to be a side effect to this medication.  Is the cure worse than the disease?  Dremr

Dremr,

I have High Blood Pressure like yourself. Have had it for about 20 years. My DR put me on Prinavil. I have never had any problems with the Prinavil (might be spelled prinival or Prinivil) or my BP. He likes it because it protects my Kidneys also. I think DRs put Diabetic patients on these types of BP meds wether they have High BP or not to protect their Kidneys.

But to get to your point. I have never had any adverse effects from Prinavil and it also does not effect my sex life like a lot of High BP meds do.

Remember, DRs prescribe the DRUGS that the last Pharmaceuitical sales person came in and told them to push, especially if that sales person is a GOOD looking Female and the DR is male and getting a free lunch or that FREE cruise to the Bahamas. TRUE, Oh, so very TRUE.

Bob, You must be right because he had oddles of samples Do you have trouble with getting enough air while exercising with this med? I go to him Tuesday. I will discuss the list of side effects that I have with this..... I hope he listens and doesn't think I'm a hypocondriact. I know that's misspelled, but you get the drift. Dremr

Dreme,   I had taken Cozaar a while back and had to get off of it.   Here in AZ. ( if I am correct, it is state law that every diabetic must be on an ACE INHIBITOR ) for protection of high blood pressure and protection of the kidneys.    I take Diovan 360 mg.    I think you better talk to your Dr. ASAP and tell him what is happening to you.    He really needs to know so he can make adjustments for you if you can not tolerate the med.

Dremr,    I did want to add that Diovan is an Anti Angiotensin med that works just like the ACE INHIBITOR to help protect the kidneys and regulate the high blood pressure.     I have been taking Diovan for a long time with no side effects at all.    You may want to try that if your Dr. permits it.

My endocrinologist wanted me to try Vasotec, an ACE Inhibitor, but it gave me chest pains. He seemed to give up and didn't try anything else. I am wondering why? Yes, I know I need to ask him. I have a 24 hour urine to do again in September. I guess if it is worse, he will want to put me on something else. I have had diabetes for almost 30 years now.

My doctor had me on the ace inhibitor, elapril, and I don't know if it helped my kidneys or not but the side effect of constant coughing was bringing on asthma attacks so I had to d/c it. My blood pressure is fine but I probably should be taking an ACE inhibitor for my kidneys... Have to ask her the next time I go..

Desertrat... are you kidding about that Arizona law?

I was on Lopressor (Metoprolol) 3 yrs ago when my Type 2 was diagnosed... am still on it @ 50 mg per day.   Lopressor is a Beta Blocker, I believe, as opposed to an Ace Inhibitor.  I'm not real sure what the differences are, buy my bp is stable.   :-)

            People who do not tolerate ACE inhibitors are usually likely to suffer the side-effect of cough when put on drugs called Angiotensin-Receptor-Blockers(ARB's),like Cozaar, though the chances are definitely less.Both drugs benefit the kidney,though there is more documentation on drugs like Elapril and other ACE inhibitors!!Kidney function tests are a must for every diabetic and we  should insist upon these tests when talking to the physician or an Endo'.

Jeanie143,    Yes, that is correct, my Dr.'s nurse told me that and I was surprised at first but it does make sense.    I presume ins. co.'s would rather pay for the meds to help protect the kidneys and high BP than to pay for dialysis and other things that may go wrong with high blood pressure such as stokes and vascular disease, diabetic retinopathy and heart attacks to name a few.

AZDesertRat is a friend of mine and is right. But there is no law like that in Virginia. The nurse told me that coughing was a big side effect of Ace Inhibitors and I think that is why they didn't put me on anything else. I am on Bumex, a diuretic, for fluid due to pneumonia I had in April and fluid problems somehow connected to GERD.

I need to add Bumex to my list of meds on here.

AZDesertRat, I just found out that Matt has been on Lisinopril now for many months for fluid and it is an Ace Inhibitor, so thank God for that. Whew! I was so worried about him as he has never had the 24 hour urine collection test done. He gets that done in September too.

I wonder if I could try Lisinopril? I would have to stop the Bumex, though. I'll have to ask the endo in September. Matt doesn't have any coughing problems at all.

I'm really at the point of adding supplements and stopping on meds though. I'm just on so very much.

Hi there,
metoprolol acts on the sympathetic nervous system whereas ACE inhibitors act predominantly on the kidneys.Metoprolol reduces heart rate and may cause impotence,both of which are not seen with ACE inhibitors.
Metoprolol can mask the early warning symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)due to it's blocking of the sympathetic nerves which usually respond to hypoglycemia by pulling glucose from the liver into the blood circulation.The early warning symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia are not masked by ACE inhibitors.I hope this is of help.

Good info re: Metoptolol.  Thanks!

Nobody has ever suggested kidney tests in relation to my diabetes.  After recurring trace of blood found during GP visits, Urologist found a kidney stone and I had lithotripsy.  He ordered 24 hr catch - said all was ok but volume was inadequate.  I try to drink more now.  What would test be looking for?  Should I be concerned?

Thank you all for the posts. There's alot to absorb and talk to the dr. about when I go. I sure don't want the meds that cause cough. He suggested that one first. If there's a side effect, I will be the one to get it. We'll see how it goes. Dremr.

Lisinopril and Prinivil are the same. I take 10 mg once a day and have never had any side effects in the 20 years I have been taking it.

Dremr,

I can breath fine when I do exercise. I don't have any side effects with Prinivil. We are all different and a drug that has no side effect for me could have side effects with you.

I would try another type of BP med than the one you are on, You should be able to find one without side effects. You might have to try and try again, but it would be worth it.
