diabetes and pregnancy

have any of you moms had experience with a pregnancy where the A1C was 8 about the time you got pregnant? My daughter is in this situation but her glucose readings are good now. She's 12 wks along and ultrasounds look very good but she was told she was at risk of having a baby with heart or neural tube defect based only on the A1C. This is very upsetting and I was hoping for some encouraging words to pass her way. Thanks, Lonna

I did some net research on this and the results were a bit difficult to understand. There has been a corellation established between the complications that were explained to you and uncontrolled blood glucose. There is a lot of study still going on in this area so at this point I can't offer much help... It's possible that the person who made this statement to your daughter is trying to cover all the bases but I can't see how this information helps her. It only adds stress to the pregnancy and won't change the outcome. Unless this medical person was proposing terminating the pregnancy I can't understand why this kind of information was given to your daughter when it is too late to go back in time and change her sugars. Only time will tell what will be, but unless there is something indicating a problem I would stick with the hope that all will be well.

Things are looking better for the health of the baby. More tests were done and things look good. With these high risk pregnancys they do every test in the book and in her past pregnancys that was OK because they all came back 'just great'. Her last doctor was very upbeat and didn't even know why a doctor would tell her that. They have ruled out major heart or neural tube defects. Her glucose levels have been great since and she has a wonderful team of specialists working with her. We are very optomistic.
