Hi I am Susan. I have been sick for about 6 months with varios problems. Drs are looking at Lupus. I have recently put on 60+ lbs. Probably because of meds. My PCP has been watching my glucose. I had a random of 165 and he said. "hope your not becoming diabetic during all of this." My fastings had been around 100 for the past few months. I had some tests done at a specialist a couple of weeks ago and my fasting was 138. My mom had an appt with the PCP (same as mine) today and mentioned the 138 and he said without hesitation well now she is diabetic. I see him next wed. I am just wondering if the weight gain has caused the elevated glucose? Maybe it was a one time thing or am I in denial. I checked it today on my moms glucometer random and it was only 96. What can I expect to happen next Tests etc...? How do you tell if it t1 or t2? Sorry but I have so many questions. Like can diabetes cause the symptoms that the drs think may be Lupus or is it the possible Lupus that causes the high blood sugar? Can I feel really cruddy when my glucose is not high? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi and welcome, Susan. Sorry that you've been sick for so long. I'm wondering, have you been on Prednisone? That can cause rapid weight gain and bring on diabetes. I don't know how old you are, and I'm certainly no expert, but I think adult onset is usually type 2. I suggest that you write down all your questions and take them to your doctor's appointment. Oh, and don't forget to pull out a pen and write the answers, too. It's so easy to get distracted by new information and forget what to ask or even to assimilate the answers. On that point, I do speak from experience. :) Good luck on getting your answers and, above all, feeling better.

Hi there,

              Your glucose values are fluctuating.The best way to confirm whether you have diabetes or not is to undergo a test called the"Oral Glucose Tolerance Test"That test is accepted as the gold standard.One other way is to get a glycosylated haemoglobin test-----"HbA1c" done and if the value exceeds 6, it can be taken as diabetes,but it is not a diagnostic test.Finally Lupus symptoms and symptoms of diabetes are vastly different.Yes,any sudden increase in weight gain of 60 pounds is a causative factor for diabetes.

Susan...Oh my gooodness you could be me!! Several years ago I went through exactly the samething. I was sick ALL the time...gained about 50 pounds when I was hardly eating anything and throwing up half the time. Had really bad headaches, would get shaky, wanted to sleep all the time, etc. Lupus was also brought up during doctors visits. My fasting glucose always looked good, so that "couldn't" be the problem...or could it??? I even tried antidepressants because I just felt so lousy...they just made everything worse! Well sure enough I wound up in the hospital...having racing heart, dizziness, numbness on the left side of my face, disoriented. my blood sugar was 384! The doctor asked me how long I had been diabetic...WHAT?? I didnt know I was!! LOL Well after 2 years of "tweaking" meds things are finally getting better. I am now taking metformin, avandia and Byetta and feel that things are on the right track. I went through all the phases....anger, denial, rebellion...you name it. I was PISSED OFF that I have this disease! Acceptance has finally brought a measure of peace and having this forum has helped tremendously. I am sure your doc will do the A1C as well. Thank you all for your replys. Yes I am on Predisone Have been on and off for about 4 months. mostly on. the weight gain came before the Prednisone. It actually came before I got sick. I have been wondering if the weight gain, aparantly from antidepressant meds. 50 lbs in 2 months the rest over the past few months, isn't the cause of all of the problems I am having. Thanks again

Susan.....50 lbs in 2 months is enough to put your body in a tail spin...I know....same thing happened to me too and it was about 6 months BEFORE I was officially diagnosed. I blamed everything on stress and as I said before I tried antidepressants but they seemed to make everything worse. Also...what is your age? do you have children? It seems like "Everything" is a factor..LOL. Your Doctor will almost surely order the A1C test and may make you do a glucose tolerance test. Since you have a family history you are more likely to develop diabetes. Adult onset is called Type 2. Do you have your own glucose meter? If not ask your doctor to help you get one. If you have insurance it should be covered. Many drugstores will run specials where you get the meter free when you buy the test strips. Also is your Doctor a General Practicioner, Internist, etc? I have a great GP but I also see an Endocrinologist who specializes in Women with diabetes....she is wonderful. When I was first diagnosed I was sort of numb...just sat there and said...duh...okay. THEN....a few months down the road I started asking about a gazillion questions and reading everything I could find about diabetes. There are the usual stages of delaing with it.....confusion, denial, anger, etc.....then I got to the point where I said NO I am going to learn about this and fight back! Knowledge is Power! Don't be afraid to ask questions....Good luck with your next Dr.'s appt...Keep me posted on what happens!...Deb
