How many people knew they had prediabetes before being diagnosed??

How many of you out there knew you had prediabetes prior to being diagnosed with type 2? Has anyone ever made the appropriate lifestyle changes and it turned into diabetes anyway? Also, if you had prediabetes, did you experience some of the same symptoms of full blown diabetes? The reason that I am asking this is that after a few trips to the doctors and many tests later, she diagnosed me with prediabetes. Given my history (dad and brother diabetic, high blood pressure, apple shape/abdominal obesity, high bad cholesterol, little exercise, and protein in the urine that is at the boarderline of abnormal) can i still avoid it if I change my lifestyle?

Any comments or thoughts would be much appreciated.

On my initial visit my Dr. walked into the exam room and asked me if there was any diabetes in my family. When I said 'Not that I know of.' he told my urine was 'pure sugar.' We did a finger stick, which he told me was 'over 200.'

In retrospect, there were some signs I could have noticed, but didn't.

So it went with me.

I had no idea. I never thought that I would have it because I thought that as long as I worked out and stayed healthy I would not get it. Boy, was I wrong. I started having symptoms about 4 months ago. It seemed like I was being given constant hints. Every once in a whle I would hear a doctor on TV talk about excessive thirst, or tingling feet or blurry vision. So one day, out of curiosity I went to the drug store and bought a device to check my blood sugar. I was shocked when it read 254! I immediately cut out all carbs and increased my running and got it to range between 120 & 180 within a week. In the mean time I scheduled a doctor's appointment and they put me on Actoplus Met. It has now been two weeks and my range is between 100 (100 during the day when I am active) & 140 (140 when I wake up and before I go to bed). It would be my guess that the more active you are the longer you can prolong it. Good luck!
