cure?

jazzy--sorry I don't know I am new to this diabetes--just alittle over 4 months now--but I sure

There is no cure for diabetes of either type. Research has been workign on a cure for many years. So far there is no cure, but we do have much better ways to manage diabetes. We have home blood testing, better insulins, insulin pumps and for type 2 there are better medications. Advances are made all the time, but are we close to a cure? I just don't know. Every so often the media reports that there is promising research and we may see the cure for diabetes in the next five years. I have heard this many times over in the 27 years I have had type 1 diabetes. I am ever hopeful that it will happen, but I just don't hold my breath when I hear the words "cure for diabetes within the next five years". I am very grateful for the improvements in care though. When I was diagnosed you took one shot a day of either bovine or pork insulin. I was allergic to the bovine so I had only one choice of insulin. My sugar level could only be tested at home through a urine test. They weren't nice little test strips either. You used a test tube, put in some drops of urine, some drops of water and then you added a tablet. It fizzed and became very hot. Then it changed colors. That is how you tested back then. Needless to say, control wasn't very good for diabetics back then. I am so thankful every day for the advances that let me know just what my blood sugar is at any time I want to test it, for the newer insulins and for the insulin pump I wear. The advances have been amazing, but is there a cure near? I honestly can't tell you. We can hope. As for the breathing exercises mentioned above, I really don't think they are almost a cure. I can't see where they would be a bad thing though. Certainly would be good for your lungs anyway. They aren't the way to manage diabetes though.   Until there is a cure you need to watch your diet, exercise, take your insulin and test often. We want healthy bodies if the day comes that we can be cured. For most of my life I have not been well controlled. Now I am. I can't begin to tell you the difference in how I feel that being in control has made. I never realized how bad I felt until I started to feel good.

Hi jazzy... One thing I tell say for sure is, there will always be improvements. Insulins and oral meds keep getting better, delivery and testing devices are like computers now: they've already got the next generation in the wings by the time they've released a new product.

Research is going on all over the world and that information is being shared with each other - all leading to a better and better understanding of what might cause Type1 Diabetes, as well as how to best manage it.

I personally don't hold out for a "cure" for Diabetes in the near future (yes, of course I dream of being able to use those two words in the same sentence one day) but for now, I am continually grateful for all the improvements being made in understanding this complex disease and for the progressively better and better tools I can use to better manage it.
