Help needed on insulin pens

I have been a diabetic it seems forever.  I also have old timers disease.  Sometimes I remember my last shot and sometimes I don't.  I have been using in-dua system for a number of years and it had a memory for the last shot and the time elapsed.  Now they don't make in dua any longer and my injector has bit the dust.  I am stuck with a whole lot of Humolog vials of insulin and I find it hard to get a dose out of the vials with a syringe since I also don't see so well.  Can anyone inorm me of an injector  (pen) that has a memory both for the time elapsed from last shot to the present and for last number of units, that will take my humolog vials. 

?  I need help of this.  I just found myself injecting 50 units of insulin because I was thinking of something else.  fortunately I caught myself and injected only the right amount.  This is a great resoource.  Arundinaria

There is a very new pen (April 07) from Eli Lilly called the Memoir that records the amount, time and date of the last 16 injections.

No way are you going to be able to put your existing syringe type vials in any pen.

I did see a thread on TuDiabetes http://tudiabetes.com/ that said that there is one particular diabetes pump vial that will fit the Memoir, so it is possible to get whatever insulin you want loaded into that style of vial, so it can be used in a Memoir. I can't see anyone taking insulin out of your existing vials and reloading though.

And no, tudiabetes.com is not a commercial site despite the .com domain.

Hi Arundinaria.... I, too, bemoan the loss of my Innovo pen since mine broke a few months ago. I just loved the elapsed time meter, too. No one else made them with that feature and...You're right... they don't make them (Innovo) anymore :-(

Not sure where you are (I'm in Canada), but Novo-Nordisk makes the Novolin pens that use the same vials as your Innovo Induo pen. I have been using them since the beginning (always used for my long-acting insulin). I use the Novolin-4 pen; it's the latest injector pen and I love it.

I know they have different pens in the USA and I don't think the Novolin pens are available there but, you may want to do a search on penfill/ insulin pens or see if you can't order the Novolin pen on-line. Your doc should also be a good resource to suggest an alternative. Just some suggestions.

I believe that if you had a product that you liked and it's discontinued you should write to every pharmaceutical company out there and ask them to make it. With the baby boomer generation getting along in years we are all going to have the memory and sight issues that Arundinaria speaks of. The drug companies seem to be all hot to trot to cater to us '50's folks so maybe a few emails in the right direction will get their attention. Just my 2ยข.

I donn't know if this helps or not, but I do sympathise. I was in a coma for 3 weeks 4 years ago (unrelated to diabetes) and when I rejoined the land of the living I didn't even know the names of my children. Ever since that time I have written my daily insulin doses in my diary. So now I could tell you how much insulin I've used for any meal since July 2003! Maybe it's not high tech, but I doubt there's a pen that could do that?

ok Jeanie. You have convinced me to do something for myself. I m writing to some of the companies and telling them what I want. I just hope they listen.



fergusc Greaat idea I had forgotten that writing came before electronics. Never the less I am a veritable slob and hate to work harder than I need to. I will save your idea for last as a last resort that is.
