Jane,
I almost died from pneumonia several years back... and I fully understand why they call it the "old man's friend". I actually didn't care if I took my next breath, I was so tired, and it took over a year for me to fully recover. That being said, when they developed the pneumonia vaccine I was first in line to get my shot. DON'T EVER WANT TO REVISIT THAT DEGREE OF ILLNESS AGAIN!!! (at least until it's my time to go!) For the amount of protection it gives, pro-rated over the five plus years of coverage it's a very good deal. I don't have insurance at all but would still get the shot even if it were $100 or more.
(IMHO) Anyone with a chronic disease like diabetes, hypertension, etc. should cover their fannies with both flu and pneumonia vaccines. Just helps us beat the odds.
