I Do Miss My Legs, Even if if's Just a Little

Friends,

I was just sitting here this morning in my wheelchair thinking back how things have changed for me this past year.  I guess I am having a bit of a bad day.  It was seven months ago last Sunday 7/27/08 that the doctors amputated both my legs leaving me with stumps so short that I'll never walk again.  mad

Now I am doing very well at most things.  yeah I can get around using my short crutches while scooting along on my stumps and my butt pretty well.  I also manage quite well using my wheelchair.  But there are times I do miss my legs. 

What got me in this mood was an ad I saw in the newspaper this morning.  Some store was advertising a big shoe sale.  Sounds weird, but I used to love going shopping for shoes.  I must have had close to fifty pair.  After I lost my legs December 27,2007 I gave them all away knowing that I would never need them again. Afterall no legs equals no feet and that means you have no use for shoes or socks. They were saying you could save 60% on some of the

shoes. 

What finally cheered me up a little was I can save 100% on shoes and socks since I don't have any use for either of them anymore. I've gotten used to life without my legs, but I guess I miss some of the little things I used to do like shopping for shoes.  Thanks for listening this morning.  I'm already feeling better. tongue

I'm glad you're still alive, which you wouldn't be without your surgery. I have my feet, but I have degenerative joint disease and my feet need the support of really ugly shoes! I also have an ankle brace that only fits into the ugly shoes. If I don't wear the brace and try to wear pretty shoes I hobble along like an ancient Chinese lady with bound feet. (Sigh!) So I don't buy pretty shoes anymore either. Nice to be here, though. Ugly feet or none.

You are still in the early early days of your loss, and I am so glad you came here to HW, you can cry, laugh, or whatever, because everyone cares, and everyone supports everyone.  You lost something valuable, but you gained something when you stumbled upon this forum.

Sounds like you are making the best of your predicatment...you are not letting this hold you down.  I bet if you and I were in a race...YOU would win, I have my legs and feet, but they they dont work very well.  But..such is life sometimes. 

I am glad that you had the option of life vs death...it was a high price for you and others who have gone through it, but you are alive still..and I bet your family is very happy about that.

I'm glad to be alive as well. yeah Even though not having my legs anymore isn't alot of fun it sure beats the alternatives skull skull skull .  I've been through alot the past year with having had both legs amputated and my poor vision. It's not getting any better. My night vision is getting quite bad  mad , I don't really dare go out after dark alone anymore as I have a difficult time seeing much if anything. I almost got lost in my own neighborhood a few weeks ago while trying to come home from a friends house after dark. It's very hard to use a white cane while trying to push yourself along in a wheelchair.  I can still see OK  yeah during the daytime or in very well lit areas at night using my glasses.  Something I'm very thankful for.  I have adapted quite well I believe to managing my daily tasks and doing things I want to do without my legs.  I see the eye doctor again in a few weeks.  He says there is a procedure that will help my eyes. It won't make my vision great, but it should help me see better than I do, for a while anyways.

I sincerely hope the procedure can help you see better. Fingers crossed.  Linda, when you are out and about with your wheelchair, please carry a cell phone!

I don't go anyplace without.  It's great for safety reasons like your probably thinking, but I do like to talk as well.
