Has anyone noticed the commercials for diabetes meters that talk about being ready to run 5 miles when you sugar is 30 or 60?

Does anyone feel like running with low sugars like that?  When my bs is down to 50 I feel physically sick.

Hi Marburg,

I cannot imagine anyone being able to stand upright without help with sugars as low as 30. I start feeling ill when mine dip into the 70's. I haven't seen the commercial but how does the meter help people be able to run with low blood sugar?

Ya right! Most of us would be "fixing" a low blood sugar at 60 let alone 30! I wouldn't dream of even walking around the block with a number as low as 60. No exercising for me unless I'm in the 80s or 90s :-)

I haven't seen the commercial but, I would hope that anyone watching it would realize that a blood glucose reading is a snapshot in time. That's it , That's all. It tells you where you're at, at that particular point in time; not in an hour from testing or 15 minutes ago. Only that particular moment's.

Curious to know which manufacturer it is though ;-)

I hate those dumb meter commercials. "FREE METER" if you qualify... Yeah, if you have medicare or unlimited insurance! The meters may be free but the test sticks or disks can break the bank if you don't have insurance. This is why I use the Prestige IQ meter. Strips cost me about 30¢ each out of pocket.

Doesn't really do anyone any good to give them "free" meters if the strips are so expensive. Just adds to rising health costs for the entire industry.

I got mine online. That's usually the least expensive way to buy them. The place I"ve found them to be easiest for me to order is American Diabetes Wholesale. They have several other inexpensive supplies as well. The thing I like about my meter is that it uses regular AA batteries, has big numbers and the strips are inexpensive. It's accurate, too.

I totally agree.  They give away the meters because that is not where the money is.  The money is made when you buy the test strips.  I saw one brand had 50 test strips for $109!

I googled the Woman from the Commercial name and couldn't find anything on her,so am wondering if she's even a Runner..

I doubt if she is. Anyway, I just thought it was so wrong of Bayer to use a commerical like that because it makes it sound like you would feel wonderful or normal when your bs is 30 or 60 and just having the meter makes it happen! If I had a reading of 30 I would be too shaky to do anything. At 60 I'm beginning to get shaky and would be searching for something to eat. I know that's how I would feel (had a low of 45 once and was totally miserable).

I haven't seen the commercial because I don't watch much TV, but it seems either ignorant or irresponsible to state in a commercial that anyone would be ready to do anything with blood sugar lower than 60.  Maybe on the Moon.

38 is the lowest I know my Blood Sugar has been..I couldn't go for a run or do anything..

Thank you for the heads up about the meter. I was recently diagnosed Type II Diabetic last October. At the time my doctor handed me a one touch meter for free. Shock Number One came when I was told I was a Diabetic who needed to take insulin. Shock Number two arrived when they said the strips were $182.00. for the One Touch.
I looked at the girl and said, "it's cheaper to die." I have insurance. The insurance cost me $600.00 a month. I have a $2,500.00 deductible so it is virtually useless. Thus, I have to pay for everything out of pocket. My Byetta cost $212.00. My Lantus cost me almost 100.00 per vial. Diabetes is a very costly disease in more ways than one.

Because I have no insurance I finally could no longer afford my meds. I managed to drop the Avandia and Lantus by stopping all starches. I'm now on metformin, 1000mg BID and that only costs me $4.00 a month at Sams. Plus I've lost about 40 lbs!

Jeannie...That is so wonderful for you. I too am now watching the things I eat and am biking 21 miles a week. Hopefully, my metabolism will turn around soon. One would think it would since I am only consuming 1000 calories a day and watching my carb intake. Menopause doesn't help the doctor says....but...believe me, I am trying......that is all we could do...is continue to try.

Hi Cheryl,

You were diagnosed with Diabetes and put on Insulin straight away?I thought Insulin wasn't Prescribed until Diet/Lifestyle changes/Oral Medications weren't working any longer.Oh yeah Strips ARE expensive!The Freestyle Lite Meter I just sent off for..Strips are like $1 each,so when I use the 10 free Strips that come with the Meter and buy a bottle of 50 that's $50 or a bottle of 100 it's $100!Seeing that you were put on Insulin your Blood Sugar must be raging.Can you be referred to an Endocrinologist?I ask because my late Father's Endo was really good about giving Dad 2-4 bottles of Insulin each visit.It helped him save on the cost of Insulin.Syringes are just as costly as Insulin.
