prednisone casing diabetes

my husband was 26 on active duty. he was in great health. just reenlisted for another 6 years. he went to Mississippi for disaster relief after Katrina, when he hurt his finger. he had a blood vessel that surfaced. the navy doctor gave him prednisone to stop the re-growth of it. he took 2 pills and became a type 1 diabetic. he was rushed to the emergency room because his sugars were so high. it was very scary. i read that that happened to someone else. i was wondering if you were able to get a law suite against the company that makes prednisone for casing diabetes. our lives changed for ever because of 2 little pills.

I highly doubt that you could sue the makers of prednisone.  Diabetes is a very common side effect of prednisone, as is the weight gain and mood swings.  I was diagnosed with diabetes just a couple of months after I was put on the prednisone. A few months ago, my doc and I were finally successful in getting me off of it...and now I am sure my diabetes is gone.  I went off the meds for a week or 2, but my doc made me go back to half the dose and I see her this week.  I have since gone off the diabetic drugs again, because of too many sugar lows.  So...maybe your hubby will have his diabetes reversed too?  I dont think its very common though...most people who get it...have it for life. 

 

Prednisone is known as a double edged sword.  It saved my life, but I knew there were no other options at the time they put me on it.

I didnt know it cud be used to stop something from growing..I just know it is a very powerful anti-inflammatory.

I'm so sorry about your husband.  The only advice I have is to consult a lawyer to see if you have any recourse.  As Ericsmom says it's well-known that steroids like prednisone can cause diabetes although it's a temporary condition most of the time.  Your case might be unusual because you say your husband became type 1.  I'm sorry I can't help any more than that.  Good luck.

The steroids may not have caused your husband's Type1 diabetes, it may have been lurking in his system and the steroid just pushed him over the edge. Most likely he would have turned up with this condition sooner or later. Late onset diabetes is sometimes called Type 1.5 or LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) and has a whole set of rules for itself. Once he is stable and learns his food plan there is no reason he can't continue a normal life. We have a few 1.5 diabetics here and they have learned to live with it.

Accepting life changes is sometimes difficult but your husband will need to get past his own anger and regret. If you are also angry it will only slow down his acceptance of his condition. Please try to learn more and be helpful and you will both do better in time. I am thankful that there is insulin for his condition. Before the 1920's anyone with his type of diabetes was condemned to a slow and wasting death by starvation, no matter how much they ate.

Read all you can and get the doctor to prescribe nutrition classes that you can both attend. The more you learn about his condition the better you can both preserve his health. Good luck with this.
