Walmart A1C

Hello Y'all,

Pre-diabetic...no meds.  I've been having really good BGLs lately...Yay me!  I used to have high FBGs but they've been in the two diget range for the last month or so.  What I want to ask y'all is if anyone of you is familiar with the Walmart A1C tests that you send through the mail.  They cost like nine bucks or so.  I'm 64 female with no insurance and can't afford a doc visit or lab work at this time.  Has anyone here had the Walmart test?  If so do you think it's accurate?  I know it probably won't be as accurate as the lab...I welcome anyone's response...I am tempted to get one every time I go to Walmart to buy my glucose strips.  Joni

Hi Lanie, thank you so much for your reply. I'm going to buy the Walmart A1C test. It sounds easy to use and I realy want to know how it turns out. I also have another question...don't know if I should start a new topic for it.

My glucose strips are paid for out of pocket. I'm going broke! I use the ACCU-CHEK COMPACT monitor and the strips are expensive. I have been thinking of ordering the strips on line. I've checked some sites and have found some that are nearly half price of what I've been paying. I would like to know if anyone orders on line. Can you tell me of a good one to order from that I can trust the quality of the product? I'm almost out of strips so will need to get more soon. If it's against the forum rules to recomend a place to purchase from I will understand. I would just like to know if you think it's safe to order on line. Thanks! Joni

You might want to think about going to a "store brand" monitor and test strips.

In the past I used the Relion monitor and test strips from Wal Mart and they showed as accurate as the One Touch, Contour, and other name brand meters I used later on. They just didn't come with much in the way of bells and whistles.

You should be able to get a monitor for around $10-$15 and the test strips run around $40 or $50 for 100.

I have also had doctors suggest Walgreen's store brand monitors when I had to pay out of pocket for test strips. They run about the same, only slightly higher, than the Relion from Wal Mart.

I wouldn't hesitate using either one.

I saw an A1C meter (at Target I think, but it may have been somwhere else). It said it gave results in about five minutes. I though it was interesting, but as my health plan covers lab tests, I couldn't justify the $85 price tag. And I don't know what testing supplies for it cost.

Has anyone seen these home A1C meters. Are they any good?

I've used the Bayer Contour which also gives A1c in about 5 minutes (you get 2 kits) for 29.99. It's been close to the results I get from the lab and my doctor even approves of them.
