Sable, any kind of change like this, especially one associated with health, can bring down your mood. I'm sure this has happened to many of us. If you are having a very hard time with this, maybe you need to speak to your doctor about
how this is affecting your moods. This may be similar to the stages of grief, you know?
I don't see it the same way you do, however. I saw it (still do) as a new lease on life, actually an extended lease on life. You need to realize all the implications of uncontrolled diabetes: damaged organs (heart, kidneys, eyes problems can lead to heart attacks, kidney failure and blindness), circulation and nerve endings (neuropathy can lead to amputation). No one knows exactly how elevated blood sugar affects different people, some more than others, etc. Since I saw some of these effects on my mother's side because of diabetes, let's say I was scared straight but I was thankful that my doctor prescribed the blood glucose meter for me when she saw my fasting trend was rising.
I learned everything I could. I searched the Internet and I found this site. I bought Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution after another member recommended it and learned that I could probably control my health by diet and exercise. And I have, for about 4 years since then.
I gave up bread and I want to tell you bread was always on our table. We ate dinner with a piece of Italian bread in one hand and a fork in the other. That was the hardest. Now? I will have a piece only sometimes when we're out but not all the time. I don't miss potatoes.
I eat a nice piece of meat/chicken/fish with sauteed vegetables and some salad food on the side with wedges of cheese. This is a typical dinner. Since changing my diet and getting regular exercise (including using weights), I've lost weight and improved my cholesterol. The doctor even said I could stop one of the two blood pressure meds I was on.
The reason I've kept asking you about getting the meter is there is no way of knowing what your blood sugar is if you don't have one. Then, you can keep track of your progress.
I love to cook and there are great combinations of all the food you can eat! What kind of food do you like?
You can improve your health and extend your life, have better quality of life, by making just a few changes. I promise!
