Welcome to the Forum, UNCgal. Sorry you are going through the confusing beginning of this though. My doctor prescribed the meter to me about
four years ago and, well, here I am, too! Anyway, when we test 2 hours after eating (called "postprandial"), we're supposed to time it from the minute we start the meal, when we first put food or drink into our mouth. Morning blood sugar readings, which are really
fasting since it's overnight, are done when you wake up before you eat or drink anything (except water) and most doctors say that a 'normal' fasting should be under 100. As far as other blood sugar readings, like after meals, you'll find a LOT of different opinions among different doctors and medical societies, so I would encourage you to read everything you can find. You can start with the two stickies at the top of our Diabetes Forum: a Testimonial by TVEditor and the other one which has several posts which will help you understand why our blood sugar rises. Everyone's blood sugar rises and falls throughout the day but diabetics and people who cannot metabolize carbs efficiently will see higher blood sugar when they eat any food made with flour or sugar and potatoes and corn. Cutting out this
white food not only helps us keep our blood sugar lower, closer to normal, but also helps us lose weight. I hope this helps you start off on the right foot. Don't be afraid to ask questions here! We've all been there... honest!
