Ok, so I have just crossed over the threshold from pre diabetes to diabetes b/c my fasting bs is 130. My blood sugars have never been over 180 ever and my last Alc was 6.7. I have mildly high BP, 130/82 and I have protein in my urine. Has anyone else had this? My rheumy said it is from the hypertension/diabetes. I just thought that you had to have higher blood sugars and blood pressure for this to happen. I was curious if anyone else experienced this so early in the disease?? I am worried. I have a lot going on medically, that's for sure.

I've first had it about
10 years after diagnosis, but it disappeared after I was put on blood pressure medication. Both my blood pressure and A1c were significantly higher than yours but I'm also type 1.

I've never had that. Have you had further tests, particularly for kidney function? Here's a link to the Mayo Clinic.

This is something you should discuss with your primary care doctor or your endocrinologist if you have one. There are many reason why protein can show up in the urine including illness and infection. I have also heard that fairly strenuous exercise can cause it as well as having a very high protein meal within 8-24 hours before the test.
If this is the first time it has been noted I wouldn't worry too much at this point. For most people to have protein in the urine due to diabetes it is due to having very high chronic blood sugars, usually approaching 200 or more. It would be a good idea to have another urine test done in a couple of months and see what those results are and then if they still show the protein your doctor may order a 24 hour collection to get a better idea what is going on.
If it is determined that your kidneys are having issues your doctor may want to put you on Lisinopril. This medication is often prescribed for high blood pressure but it also has been shown to protect the kidneys and slow any damage that may be occurring.
For me it took 5 or so years of uncontrolled blood sugars before I started showing protein and it wasn't until my BGL started averaging around 200.
