Friends,
I haven't posted in a while. Things have been going pretty well for me the past few months until just last week. No I'm OK it's a very close friend of mine that I met in the hospital when I had my legs amputated a few years ago. She was in for another problem when we met. She is a type one diabetic who has had her share of problems with the disease. I last talked to her in late October, she was having a hard time walking due to problems with her legs. I ran into her at the mall about a week before Christmas while I was Christmas shopping and she was using a wheelchair to get around as her legs just wouldn't take all the walking at the mall. I asked her how she was doing, but all she said was that her legs hadn't got any better and changed the subject to something else. She seemed pretty down in the dumps. I tried to cheer her up, but it really didn't work too well. She just said we needed to get together after the holidays.
Well her husband called me Tuesday evening, just three days ago and told me Ann his wife, my friend was in the hospital. I asked him why. He acted surprised like I should know but I didn't. He told me that the afternoon that I met her at the mall she had just found out that morning that the doctor had told her that her legs had gotten so bad that they needed to both be amputated very soon. Ann pressured the doctor into putting it off untill after the holidays as she didn't want to wreak Christmas for her kids and grand kids. He told her OK and said he hoped they didn't get any worse before then. Ann told the doctor if you're taking off my legs whats a few more inches, I won't be able to walk anyways. They scheduled the amputations for Tuesday the 3rd. Ann's husband told me they had to amputate both legs about a foot above her knees. He said Ann was doing well and wanted to see me as soon as possible. I went to see her last night she was doing pretty well for all she had been through this week. It brought back a lot of memories for me from 2007 when I lost my legs. Ann made some wise crack about racing me down the hall in her wheelchair when she felt better. When she said that I knew she had the inner strength to survive this ordeal and get on with life. We all laughed a little about that, but I know she has a long road ahead of her before she can take me up on that one. She told me that her doctor said her prognosis was pretty good, but had told her that she would always need a wheelchair and she would never walk again. I'm going to see her again tonight. She called me this morning and asked when I was coming again. She seems to be taking this all pretty well. I will try to be there for her as much as I can as she helped me through some pretty rough times a few years ago.
